The Minor Field Studies series is published by the International Office of the Swedish Universityof Agricultural Sciences.Minor Field Studies are carried out within the framework of the Minor Field Studies (MFS)Scholarship Programme, which is funded by the Swedish International Development CooperationAgency (Sida).The MFS Scholarship Programme offers Swedish university students an opportunity to undertaketwo months' field work in a developing country to be analysed, compiled and published as an indepthstudy or graduation thesis work. The studies are primarily made on subjects of importancefrom a development perspective and in a country supported by Swedish development assistance.The main purposes of the MFS programme are to increase interest in developing countries and toenhance Swedish university students' knowledge and understanding of these countries and theirproblems and opportunities. AbstractThis study is a follow-up of two earlier projects on improved fallow systems in shifting cultivationareas of northern Laos. During, these projects leguminous species such as Leucaenaleucocephala and Cajanus cajan were introduced at experimentation plots on farm level, aimingat quicker soil recovery during the fallow period of the upland rice cropping cycle. Throughinterviews with involved farmers some conclusions on farmers' opinions, performance of plot andimproved fallow species could be drawn.In the farmers' opinions plot performance is increased by plantation of leguminous species. andthis is to some extent supported by collected yield data. The best-suited species for improvedfallow is Leucaena leucocephala, as it can maintain stable yields with higher land-pressure and itsurvives multiple cropping periods.
