A variety of post-secondary opportunities are available within commutingdistance. These opportunities include Emory and Henry College, Virginia HighlandsCommunity College, Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center, King College, VirginiaIntermont College, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, and East TennesseeState University.Cultural opportunities are available through the Barter Theatre, Theatre Bristol,William King Regional Art Center, and Paramount Center for the Arts. Curriculum and InstructionPatrick Henry High School offers a variety of courses to meet the needs andinterests of students. Fine arts, agriculture, and business courses are available oncampus with additional career and technical programs available at the WashingtonCounty Technical School and the Neff Vocational Center.Within the past five years, Patrick Henry has worked cooperatively with theschool division and Virginia Highlands Community College to provide students withcourses that can also be used toward college credit. For a small school, Patrick Henryhas worked continuously to improve educational opportunities for those studentsseeking advanced studies by offering Advanced Placement, Dual Enrollment, andGovernor’s School courses.The school has also expanded its resources within career and technicaleducation by adding courses that are relevant to today’s job market and industry. Sixtysevenpercent of the student body is enrolled in career and technical education courses.To support the curriculum, Patrick Henry currently has access to three computer labswith up-to-date operating systems, Microsoft Office, WordPerfect, Multimedia and theInternet. A mobile lab will be added in Fall of 2004. All Virginia State Standards ofLearning tests are given on-line with the exception of Geometry.3
