New and Special Features in the ESC Congress 2011 Scientific Programme• Congress Spotlight: “Controversial issues in Cardiology”This spotlight theme has been chosen to clarify conflicting views across several aspects of cardiovascularmedicine. There are, inevitably, different opinions on certain topics, and these occur anywhere from basicscience and research to the most complex interventional procedures. The ESC Congress is the platformfor constructive debate on the issues based on evidence and experience.• Topics by VillageFor the delegates‟ convenience most scientific sessions were arranged by topic in themed villages(Zones A-F).• Cardiologists of Tomorrow TrackThe Cardiologists of Tomorrow programme is a partnership between the ESC and its National CardiacSocieties and Affiliated Cardiac Societies. It consists of a dynamic specific educational track throughoutthe Congress that provides young cardiologists with some of the most relevant and up to dateinformation on key areas in Cardiovascular Medicine.A one day track in Room Zagreb was also dedicated to CoT sessions organised by the young for theyoung.• Clinical case sessionsClinical cases (presenters were all under 35) selected by the nucleus members of the ESC Cardiologists ofTomorrow were presented during interactive sessions chaired by a senior cardiologist and a youngercolleague.• Bilingual Track for General Practice Physicians and NursesAll day Saturday in room Athens. These sessions were dedicated to common problems in cardiovascular diseases open to all but specificallyaimed at primary care practitioners, general physicians and nurses. It covered the most relevant issuesthese professionals have to face on a daily basis. This programme was organised in conjunction with theESC Council for Cardiology Practice, the ESC Council on Cardiovascular Primary Care and the ESC Councilon Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions. There was a special one day registration fee for GeneralPractice Physicians (€135) and Nurses (€50) attending just this programme.ESC for GPs & Nurses attendance by geographical area4% 3%17%25%51%ESCAsia PacificSouth & Central AmericaNorth AmericaAfrica (non ESC)• More Joint sessions with Global perspectiveIncluding the Brazilian Society of Cardiology, the Saudi Heart Association, the Chinese Society ofCardiology and Cardiological Society of India.• Gender TrackA series of abstract sessions on Sunday 28 August and Monday 29 August in room Riga (Zone B).Gender medicine has become one of the most interesting and attractive topics in cardiovascularmedicine. The differences in morbidity and mortality among the genders even in conditions with similar risk factorsattracted a lot of attention about the pathophysiological differences.Furthermore, special related issues like pregnancy with congenital heart disease, pregnancy relateddiseases like preeclampsia, hypertension and peripartal cardiomyopathy are among the most intensivelydiscussed issues. Therefore the Congress Programme Committee, for the first time at an ESC Congress, put together aspecial track on gender related aspects of cardiovascular disease for the congress in Paris.Scientists, clinicians and epidemiologists are invited to enrichen this field with their contributions.Evaluation Report ESC Congress 2011 Page 4

‣ Delegate ProfilesThe “Raise Your My ESC Profile” initiative, launched in April 2010, requesting My ESC Users, and congress delegates onsite, to update their personal and contact data and profileinformation, greatly improved the quantity and quality of profile data for congress attendees lastyear (from levels below 30% previously to 70%).Raise Your My ESC Profile is now a continuous process throughout the year, helping tomaintain the higher levels of profile data in our database. For the ESC Congress this year, asofter approach was adopted than last year, with no prize draw and significantly less logisticsand resources onsite. Emphasis was placed more on publicity pointing out the importance ofverifying personal data to ensure receipt of the journal, etc., and using the traditionalsubscription and membership zones at the congress for delegates to check/update their data.Profile information this year is based on around 67% of active delegates.‣ Attendee Profiles: 2011 v 2010 v 2009 v 2008The profile information contained here is taken from information supplied voluntarily online or, during ESCCongress 2011, through the My ESC Browser application.Overall the summary profiles are similar, but there are some variations which are highlighted in theindividual sections.Following the “Raise Your “My ESC” Profile” this year, the % of delegates providing profile information in MyESCis very much higher than the two previous years. Overall the profiles are similar to the two previous years, butthere are some variations which are highlighted in the individual sections.‣ Place of WorkWhereas previously the place of work information was only provided by the cardiologist profession, it is nowavailable to be completed by all. The “Research” and “Other” options have only been available since March 2008,and were disproportionately low in 2008 and 2009, but in 2010 (with the initiative to review/update the profile)the proportions are more representative and they now form a much more significant proportion of attendees –with the proportion “In University Hospital” decreasing significantly. The average number ofcategories chosen per attendee for both years is close to 6.5.
