The <strong>Club</strong> is proud to be workingwith Donwood Nursinghome in our Autumn fundraisingdrive.A not for profit and community-basedorganis<strong>at</strong>ion, DonwoodCommunity Aged CareServices is committed to providinga safe, happy and comfortablehome for its residents.Governed by a volunteerCommittee of Management,Donwood is loc<strong>at</strong>ed in leafyCroydon, Victoria, on land don<strong>at</strong>edby <strong>the</strong> st<strong>at</strong>e governmentand reserved for a purposebuilt,government funded agedcare facility.Starting out as a 30-bed nursinghome and CommunityDay Centre in 1991, in 1998, <strong>the</strong> facility wasfur<strong>the</strong>r extended to offer 44 low care bedswith 14 places dementia-specific. In 2004,Donwood added to its services with an additional16 beds to provide <strong>the</strong> communitywith a 30-bed, low care dementia specificunit.Again addressing local needs, in 2008, constructionbegan on six Independent LivingUnits (ILU), with <strong>the</strong> first ILU resident welcomedin June 2009.Today, Donwood continues to support itsresidents, whose needs vary from low careto full dementia services, by providing <strong>the</strong>mwith a warm and caring place to call home.Make a don<strong>at</strong>ion to Donwood <strong>at</strong> any pointof sale <strong>at</strong> ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Club</strong> <strong>Kilsyth</strong> or <strong>Club</strong> Ringwood.The <strong>Club</strong> sponsors numeroussporting endeavours, both <strong>at</strong>individual, team and club levels.This February <strong>the</strong> <strong>Club</strong> sponsoredone of our rising basketballstars, K<strong>at</strong>e Leckenby inher journey to <strong>the</strong> Ivor BurgeN<strong>at</strong>ional Basketball Championships.This opportunity offersjunior players <strong>the</strong> chanceto play in an elite tournamentrepresenting <strong>the</strong>ir club, schoolor st<strong>at</strong>e on <strong>the</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ional stage.Held in Launceston, Tasmania,K<strong>at</strong>e represented Victoriain <strong>the</strong> MetropolitanWoman’s Team. Teams fromacross <strong>the</strong> n<strong>at</strong>ion convergedon <strong>the</strong> meeting, with teamsrepresenting Victoria Country,South Australia, Tasmania,New South Wales Countryand New South Wales Metropolitanpresent.After a successful round robincampaign, <strong>the</strong> Victorian Metroteam met NSW Metro in <strong>the</strong>semi finals, triumphantly winningto progress to <strong>the</strong> goldmedal game against NSWCountry, successfully defe<strong>at</strong>ing<strong>the</strong>m to return home with <strong>the</strong>championship ring.K<strong>at</strong>e was recognised forher basketball capability andachievements demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> championships andsince has been invited for <strong>the</strong>squad for <strong>the</strong> Australian Pearls(Australian Woman’s Basketballteam for player with anintellectual disability)K<strong>at</strong>e is one of twenty players from acrossAustralia to be selected into <strong>the</strong> 2013 pearlssquad, a training camp for Victorian squadmembers will be held in March workingtowards <strong>the</strong> final selection of 10 playersto represent Australia <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> intern<strong>at</strong>ionalCompetition held in Turkey l<strong>at</strong>er in <strong>the</strong> year.On speaking with K<strong>at</strong>e her highlights of <strong>the</strong>tournament were meeting new friends andhaving <strong>the</strong> opportunity to play against someamazing players.12 | <strong>Club</strong> News | Edition 24
