This June, join us <strong>at</strong> <strong>Club</strong> <strong>Kilsyth</strong> for <strong>the</strong> “Let’s Dance” Big Band. We talk to <strong>the</strong> band aboutits heritage and wh<strong>at</strong> <strong>you</strong> can expect when <strong>you</strong> join us for <strong>the</strong> Big Band Afternoon.The Big Band was originally formedin 1981 and played a number of“gigs”, weddings, balls, dinner dancesand concerts. Over recent years<strong>the</strong>re has been a resurgence of interestin <strong>the</strong> music of <strong>the</strong> 30’s and40’s thanks to <strong>the</strong> broadcasting ofour kind of music by many publicand community radio st<strong>at</strong>ions. Theband has played for extended seasons<strong>at</strong> various suburban hotels aswell as special functions <strong>at</strong> some ofMelbourne’s elite hotels including<strong>the</strong> Palladium Room in <strong>the</strong> CrownCasino. Recently <strong>the</strong>y have done“special” shows <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Astor The<strong>at</strong>re,playing swinging music after <strong>the</strong>film showing to a very enthusiasticaudience.The Let’s Dance Big Band is madeup of 5 saxes and woodwinds, 3or 4 trumpets, 3 or 4 trombonesand 3 or 4 rhythm, up to 18 in all.There is a good mix of <strong>you</strong>ng andolder age members all with a broadexperience ranging from universitymusic training to many years in <strong>the</strong>Town Hall dance scene, <strong>the</strong><strong>at</strong>re pit,teaching, jazz and orchestral areas.The arrangements, “charts”, we useare in most cases au<strong>the</strong>ntic renditionsfrom <strong>the</strong> well known recordingsor unique adapt<strong>at</strong>ions for us.We love to play all <strong>the</strong> classic bigband favourites of Goodman, Ellington,Basie, Shaw, Herman, Miller,Dorsey, James. We have many au<strong>the</strong>nticcharts from <strong>the</strong>se gre<strong>at</strong>bands in addition to an extensivelibrary of standards and someof <strong>the</strong> more modern tunes, plus,many charts for <strong>the</strong> Jive, Swing andLindy Hop dances now all <strong>the</strong> rage.We also have a good selection ofL<strong>at</strong>in favourites and an Old TimeBallroom dance book Charmaine,Evening 3 step, Pride of Erin, SwingWaltz, Tangoette to name a few.
