From the Director of theINSTITUTE OF ELECTRONIC SYSTEMSThe Institute of Electronic Systems is one of six institutes of the Faculty of Electronics andInformation Technology of WUT. It offers a wide range of opportunities for undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students, as well as technical and intellectual resources for theindustry. Our teaching and research activities respond to the needs of today’s electronics andcomputer engineering. As it will be seen from the prospectus, there are courses, andopportunities for studying and research in‣ automatic measurement and test systems,‣ semiconductor and smart sensors,‣ flow measurements,‣ optoelectronic circuits for sensing and telecommunication,‣ computer engineering with artificial intelligence,‣ neural networks and adaptive measurement systems,‣ microprocessor systems,‣ digital systems and digital signal processing,‣ microwave networks and instrumentation,‣ design software systems for VLSI integrated circuits and monolithic integratedcircuits for high frequencies,‣ analogue and pulse electronic circuits and systems. Our activities in these topics are very much hardware oriented and devoted to practicalapplications in medicine, radar, radio communication, distributed environment monitoringsystems etc. The Institute has managed to develop and sustain a network of modern teaching andresearch laboratories. It creates a strong basis for our staff to perform and fulfill researchprograms for the Polish industry and within the European programs.Members of the Institute staff are devoted teachers and researchers. In 2002 they published12 scientific and teaching books, 59 journal papers and 85 papers in conference proceedings. For their outstanding achievements in research and teaching, academics of the Institutehave gained 1 Reward of the Minister of National Education and 4 Rewards of the Rector of theWarsaw University of Technology. In the continuing programme of expansion and development of the Institute we havereached new successes. In 2002 our Institute gained a post of the Coordinator of the EuropeanCenter of Excellence „COMBAT“ with 6 participating institutions from Poland and EU.Last year we established also extensive scientific cooperation with the DeutchesElektronen Synchrotron – DESY, Hamburg, Germany and with the Institute of Applied Physicsof the Warsaw University. Our Ph.D. students are participating in common research programsdevoted to electronic measurement systems involved in high energy physics experiments.Students who come to the Institute of Electronic Systems will be joining a dynamic, expanding and lively institution, in which, I believe, we are managing to retain one of the longstandingtraditions of our Institute, that of being the Institute with high standards for educationand research and a friendly place with good relations between staff and students. Our developments are taking place thanks to strong involvement of the academic staff andadministration. I appreciate this opportunity to express the thanks to our staff, students andfriends who identify with our goals. The DirectorProfessor Janusz A. Dobrowolski, Ph.D., D.Sc.
