Programme overview
Biotechnology is a globally expanding area with respect
to both research and production, and Lund University is
among the leading universities in the world with sever
al renowned scientists. A number of biotech companies
are operating in Lund. Biotechnology has an impact on
issues like health and pharmaceuticals, food produc
tion, waste water treatment and other environmental
issues, as well as the production of chemicals.
The Master’s in Biotechnology is a broad programme
covering different aspects of the conversion of raw
materials to products using biocatalysts, e.g. en
zymes and microorganisms. Both the development
of the biocatalyst and the process are covered. The
role of biotechnology in a sustainable society is also
discussed. The programme is aimed at those with an
interest in the possibilities of using biological systems

gene technology, bioprocess technology, immuno
technology, bioseparation, enzyme technology, pro
The programme is closely aligned to market needs and
there is an emphasis on engineering aspects. During
your studies you will meet not only researchers at the
departments but also lecturers from biotech compa
can prove that they are registered for the last semester
of a programme leading to such a degree. An official
document stating that they are likely to be awarded
the degree before the start of the Master’s pro
gramme must be submitted. The degree certificate has
to be presented before the start of the programme.
MASTER PROGRAMME IN ENERGY-
EFFICIENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL
BUILDING DESIGN

of Architecture and Built Environment (coordinator)

Programme overview
Buildings are responsible for a large share of our glob
al energy use. Energy use is in fact the main determi
nant of a building’s global environmental footprint,
considering its total life span. The environmental deg
radation caused by the construction and operation of
buildings should be minimised as much as possible.
This new Master’s programme is timely due to the is
sue of global warming and other environmental risks
related to global energy use.
Lund University is internationally renowned for high

The expertise at Lund University is centred on a whole
building perspective taking into account the need of
the inhabitants, as well as their comfort and health.
The Master’s programme will greatly benefit from ad
vanced research at Lund University and by strong links
established with the building industry.
This Master’s programme will provide knowledge,

ronmental building design in cold climates. The ulti
mate goal is to train highly skilled professionals, who
will significantly contribute and influence the design,

taking into consideration the architecture and envi
ronment, the inhabitants’ behaviour and needs, their
health and comfort as well as the overall economy.
The building sector is in need of professionals who are
competent in these areas.
Each of the three first semesters will consist of two

The themes studied each semester will be directly ap
plied in the practical course where you will work in
Career prospects
The global work market’s need of professionals within
this area is obvious due to environmental risks and in
creasingly demanding building regulations. There is

efficient building design, with professionals who can
rapidly lead the building industry and municipalities
into a sustainable future. As a graduate from this Mas
ter’s programme, you will be able to work in design
teams responsible for energy and environmental issues,
and take the lead as key person in companies and mu
nicipalities pursuing energy and environmental aspects
