After WWII, the French wanted to get back their control of Vietnam. In 1946, Ho Chi Minh andthe Vietminh began to fight against French forces for their independence. France was supportedwith money and help by the USA, and also by some Vietnamese. Vietnam: Part 3In the early 1960s, the US built up a military presence in South Vietnam. At the same time, theSoviet Union was supplying the North Vietnamese army. A guerilla war had been going on foryears in South Vietnam. In 1964, the US launched its first attack on North Vietnam.The war soon spread into neighbouring Laos and Cambodia. Millions of civilians were killedin both North and South Vietnam.
