274Graduate SchoolCourse DescriptionsEDU 610 Learning Theory andInstruction (3)Covers various philosophies, aspects andmodels of academic and social learning.Emphasis will be placed upon such topicsas multiple intelligences, learning styles,teaching styles, critical thinking skills,brain-based learning and other instructionaltheories. Students will review and critiquegeneral learning theories, as well asinvestigate how people organize, encode,process, transform, utilize and articulateinformation presented in an instructionalenvironment.EDU 611 Social, Cultural, and LegalIssues in Education (3)Examines and explores K-12 educationas a social and cultural phenomenonand the implications of this perspectivefor schooling, multicultural education,educational development, and the processof teaching and learning. Students willreview, evaluate, critique and present in ascholarly manner the influences of political,legal, economic, and governmental variableson education. In addition, appropriateteacher/school responses will be explored.EDU 612 Current Trends in Curriculumand Instruction (3)Review of current trends in curriculumand instruction, which will include ananalysis of best practices based on currentresearch. Change process theories as theyrelate to educational institutions are alsocovered. Numerous strategies such as theappropriate use of inquiry based learning,problem solving based learning, cooperativelearning, and other effective pedagogy willbe incorporated into content lesson andunit design.EDU 613 Current and EmergingTechnologies in Education (3)Integrates practical uses of educationaltechnology with theoretical, philosophical,and ethical aspects of teaching andlearning through appropriate applicationof instructional design principles. Thiscourse provides entry level throughadvanced technology instruction inthe use of computers, multimediatechnologies, Internet curriculum planning,implementations, revisions, assessment,and computer-based portfolio assessment.Skills introduced in the first module will beintegrated with introductory instructionaldesign concepts and assessment andevaluation procedures to produce authenticexperiences across the K-12 curriculum.This course meets several of the technologyproficiency standards set forth by theInternational Society for Technologyin Education (ISTE) and the OhioDepartment of Education (ODE).EDU 620 Action ResearchProject Design (3)Provides students with the knowledge andskills to design an action research projectrelated to the area of degree specialization.The course will examine methods of researchin education, research design and will includequalitative and quantitative approaches.Students will learn the steps and protocolassociated with action research and will berequired to design an action research proposal.EDU 621 Action Research Project (3)Allows students to conduct research in aspecific, approved area of interest related totheir career and area of study.
