Engin OnderTurkeyWith a background in advertising and communication design, I am the founder of theInstitute of Creative Minds, an Istanbul-based network of creative professionals, where Idevelop art, design, culture and media projects for physical and digital public spaces. Throughthe 140journos communication project, the largest network and organised structure for citizen journalism definingliterature, I scrutinise the changing habits of news consumption and production, in a country like Turkey with aproblematic political and social backdrop. I also present 140journos’s radio show on a weekly basis on Acik Radyo,as well as occasionally writing for the Harvard University Nieman Reports.140journos - ActivatingCitizen Journalism140journos, Turkey’s largest network of citizen journalism, is planning to informcommunities on site about news reporting.Citizen reporting has emerged as a viable alternativeto the lack of diversity and ongoing (self)censorship inthe media. Relying on 140-character bursts, citizenscan now report on events that the mainstream mediaignore. But is it possible to create a self-sustainedcitizen news agency that covers reporting on manylevels? 140journos would like to unleash this potentialby taking our established network to cities andorganising “civic conversations” to bridge the gapbetween those who witness and produce news. Byproviding physical and virtual public spaces in eachcity, the project would like to figure out the best wayto take advantage of our local, national and Europeannetworks in order to get the word of our issues out andcontribute to their solutions. While doing so, we wouldlike to show “public space” isn’t an elusive concept;but it’s actually what we collectively create throughreporting, analysing and discussing.47
