A GUIDE TO STUDYING HISTORY AT FORT HUACHUCAwas responsible for the security <strong>of</strong> theManhattan Project, the secret scientificwork on the atomic bomb, andperformed censorship duties for allmail arriving from overseas. CounterIntelligence Corps detachments wereassigned to each <strong>Army</strong> division in theNorth African, European and Pacifictheaters, with a total <strong>of</strong> 241 CIC detachmentsoperating during the war.The CIC detachment in Tunisiaconducted psychological warfare operationsin the prolonged fighting atEl Guettar. In North Africa and Italy,CIC agents accounted for hundreds<strong>of</strong> prisoners from whom they extractedvaluable information. In Sicilythey captured enemy radio transmittersand maps <strong>of</strong> enemyminefields. In Italy between October1944 and April 1945, the CICcaptured 200 German agents in theFifth U.S. <strong>Army</strong> area, including Dr.Kora, the commander <strong>of</strong> a Germanintelligence unit known as AbwehrKommando 190. CIC agents wereairdropped into Normandy on D-Day. They played an important partin the Battle <strong>of</strong> the Bulge and thecounter<strong>of</strong>fensive that followed,blunting the subversion campaign <strong>of</strong>Col. Otto Skorzeny who had infiltratedEnglish-speaking Germans inU.S. <strong>Army</strong> uniforms to disrupt operations.In Europe teams <strong>of</strong> CIC men followedU.S. forces into combat withthe mission <strong>of</strong> scouting out and capturingGerman work on the atomicbomb and rocketry, and taking intocustody German scientists. This wasknown as the “ALSOS” Mission, ledby Col. Boris Pash who with daringand imagination personally led histeams into enemy-held territory.
