name, but after the patent protection expires, other companies may make the drug and giveit other brand names. Atazanavir is still under patent protection, and is known as Reyataz®.SECTION 3: PREPARING THE CLINICAL COLLECTIONThe unique qualities of the clinical names meansthat they can be used in a search that is quitespecific even without employing patentclassification codes. The names also have theadvantage of crossing many language barriers.Figure 4. Yield of Inventions (<strong>Patent</strong> Families)STAGE ONE STRATEGYThe stage-one strategy shown here uses theclinical names to search within the titles, abstractsand/or claims that are available in either in full textsystems or INPADOC databases 6 , as well as theDerwent enhanced abstracts (Derwent World<strong>Patent</strong>s Index – DWPI). For the sake ofcomparability, the results are reported as counts ofDWPI invention families. By searching text fieldsindependently, it is possible to show which fieldsare useful for clinical name searching, and the chart in Figure 4 shows that all arereasonably similar, but that a combination of all three searches is the most complete. Thedetail on overlap between the collections is shown in Figure 5, and the overlap is atypicallyhigh because of the special qualities of clinical names. The text-mining exercise shown onthe next page confirms the high relevancy of the documents retrieved with this approach.Figure 5. Retrieval of invention families by source field6 The content that was probed also included the English text available for Asian documents on the ThomsonInnovation platform.11
