22 Getting aroundGetting around23Public transportOsijek offers you two possibilities to get around town:buses and trams. They both operate from 05:00 till 23:00or midnight, except the tram line that connects Višnjevacand Zeleno Polje on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdaysnights, on which you can catch a night ride every half hour.Two options are available for purchasing tickets. One ispaper ticket that can be bought from a driver at a costof 10 kuna, the ticket is valid for 40 minutes from themoment it is stamped. The second option is the so calledelectronic ticket butra, it can also be bought from a driveror at any Tisak news stand as well as at the GPP shops onCara Hadrijana Street 1, and at the Ante Starčević Square(underground). When you buy it for the first time it will cost40kn and has 20kn worth of credit. Whilst entering andleaving the vehicle, you need to scan it at a machine andduring a 40 minute ride on a tram or bus it will take 8knoff the account. Once you have used all the credits, youcan recharge it with a driver or at a news stand. Thosecaught without a ticket or not having scanned a ticket willbe charged 250kn. (+385-31) 20 60 32.Buses If you want to take the bus, they operate on the sametickets as trams and the procedure for buying and validatingthem, as well as the procedure for getting hit with a fine if youare travelling without one, is the same.The biggest bus stopfor local transport is at the Gajev trg, where you can catch aride to all destinations in town.Trams Osijek beat its larger European counterparts Budapestand Vienna to the punch in developing a tram service, a factthat many Osijek locals will be proud to let you know shouldyou mention their tram service. The tram runs on two lines,one connecting Višnjevac and Zeleno Polje and the othermaking a constant loop that runs from the train station tothe main square and back. The trams are quite modern and,if you happen to be an Osijek local that knows the names ofthe stops, a friendly mechanical voice will cheerfully announcethe name of your stop. FromZagreb, there are connections to Slovenia, Austria, Germanyand Switzerland . The trip to Zagreb takes a mere three hoursif you’re travelling with the new and refreshingly modern tiltingtrains, but up to five hours if you don’t have that luxury. You get a ticket at the box under the parking sign oruse your mobile phone to pay by sending a message withyour registration number (no gaps) to the number shown onthe box (remember to include the international dialing codeif you’re using a foreign mobile). A few minutes before yourhour of paid parking runs out, you’ll get a message to remindyou to refresh your lease of the space or move your car.
