While you are in Osijek you should alsovisit Đakovo and explore the history of the world-renownedLipizzaner horses who make their home in the region. With their muscular, Baroque build and elegant features,Lipizzaners are beautiful to behold and watching them moveis a spectacular sight. Usually thought of as white horses, they are actually born dark and have dark skin, but their coatsturn lighter every year until the hair turns snowy white as thehorses reach adulthood.Lipizzaners are perhaps best-known for the aerobatic,dance-like manouevres they perform to classical music at theSpanish Riding School in Vienna, a world-famous center forthe sport of classical dressage. The school takes its namefrom the fact that Lipizzaners were bred as military and ridinghorses for the nobility by the Habsburgs from Andalucianstock. The Habsburgs in 1580 established an imperial studat Lipica, Slovenia, and this is how the breed gained its name.Currently operating in two locations, Pastuharna and Ivandvor,Đakovo’s stud farm is representative of Croatia’s excellenthorse breeding tradition, making Đakovo’s Lipizzaner horsesan important facet of Croatia’s cultural heritage. Lipizzanerhorse teams can be seen at cultural events throughouteastern Croatia, including Đakovački vezovi, a folklore festivalof the regions of Slavonia and Baranja that takes place everyJuly in Đakovo and is a showcase of traditional folk costumes, dancing and singing groups, and local customs. Visitors arewelcome to the stud. Please call in advance if you would like aguided tour. Q Open 07:00 - 15:00 and on request. (+385-31) 75 23 20, fax(+385-31) 75 23 21, prijemni.centar@kopacki-rit.hr, www.kopacki-rit.hr. Just 10km northeast of Osijek,Kopački rit is one of the largest areas of wetland in Europe, and is something of a paradise for wading birds and theiradmirers. Declared a Nature Reserve (park prirode) in 1976,this 23000-hectare expanse of lakes, reeds, woodland andpasture is criss-crossed by dyke-top roads, making it easilyaccessible to the day-tripper.Kopački rit owes its uniquely soggy character to seasonalflooding, caused (usually in spring and autumn) when excessrainwater slows up the nearby Drava and Danube rivers, whichbegin to overflow their banks. When this happens, large areasof Kopački rit can remain under water for weeks or months, creating the perfect haven for water creatures and birdlife. There are also two permanent lakes, Sakadaš and Kopačko,each surrounded by reedy vegetation. Semi-sunken forestsof white willow thrive in the low-lying parts of Kopački rit, while poplar, oak and elm cover the higher ground. The lakessupport a huge population of carp, pike, catfish and perch, alongside an abundance of frogs, snails and insects. Duringthe course of the year Kopački rit might be visited by asmany as 285 bird species. Of these, 141 species nest hereregularly, the rest are spring and summer migrants. It’s thefish-eating birds that flourish most, with herons, cormorants,white-tailed sea eagles and egrets congregating around lakesSakadaš and Kopačko.The main entrance to the Reserve is at the Visitors’ Centre(Prijemni centar), a traditional-style thatched hut just northof the village of Kopačevo, where you pay an entrance fee andreceive an English-language information leaflet. The park iseasy to get to: if you’re driving, head north from Osijek asfar as the village of Bilje, turn right at the main crossroads, and follow the signs to “Park prirode Kopački rit”. There’s acycle path running alongside the Osijek-Bilje road, making it apleasant two-wheel jaunt. Those with no wheels whatsoeverwill have to content themselves with catching an Osijek-Biljebus (every 30-50 min from Vukovarska cesta) and walkingthe remaining 4km to the Visitors’ Centre.Osijek In Your Pocketosijek.inyourpocket.comosijek.inyourpocket.com2011 / 2012
