PrefaceIn order to promote the <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>of</strong> the consumer with<strong>in</strong> the framework <strong>of</strong> article2 <strong>of</strong> EU Parliament decision no 283/1999/EU, a consumer policy programmehas been developed. Each year the Commission calls for project proposalsto make it possible to fulfil the obligations <strong>in</strong> the programme. Some <strong>of</strong>the task fields are highlighted specially. For 2001 one <strong>of</strong> these was “promotion<strong>of</strong> consumer <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>an</strong>d education <strong>of</strong> consumers”. The motivation forour application was related to the follow<strong>in</strong>g:To give everyone, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g consumer representatives, the possibility to have updatedresults <strong>an</strong>d neutral <strong>in</strong>formation. This will <strong>in</strong> our view be <strong>of</strong> major import<strong>an</strong>ces<strong>in</strong>ce representation by <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>in</strong> st<strong>an</strong>dardisation work is strong, <strong>an</strong>dknowledge about the <strong>domestic</strong> <strong>laundry</strong> <strong>habits</strong> <strong>of</strong> today has its orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong><strong>in</strong>vestigation</strong>sperformed by the <strong>in</strong>dustry. The results from the project may also contributeto consumer protection <strong>in</strong> the sense that they c<strong>an</strong> help to prevent policy measuresfrom result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a deterioration <strong>of</strong> consumers’ <strong>in</strong>terests.In addition to the direct results achieved, the project has also made it possibleto extend knowledge <strong>an</strong>d communication between research <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>an</strong>dconsumer org<strong>an</strong>isations <strong>in</strong> 4 different countries: Spa<strong>in</strong>, Greece, the Netherl<strong>an</strong>ds<strong>an</strong>d Norway, represented by Edocusa (OCU), the General ConsumersFederation <strong>of</strong> Greece (INKA), Wagen<strong>in</strong>gen University dept. Consumer Technology& Product Use (WUR) <strong>an</strong>d the National Institute for Consumer Research(<strong>SIFO</strong>), respectively.We would like to th<strong>an</strong>k all contributors <strong>in</strong> the four countries for their spirit <strong>of</strong>co-operation <strong>an</strong>d their efforts to make the project successful. First <strong>of</strong> all: specialth<strong>an</strong>ks to Anna Risnes who had the idea for the project, org<strong>an</strong>ised the projectteam <strong>an</strong>d wrote the application, then left for <strong>an</strong> even more excit<strong>in</strong>g responsibility– a new baby just as the project started.In the project team, special recognition goes to Carja Butijn <strong>an</strong>d AnnekeEngelbert<strong>in</strong>k <strong>in</strong> the Netherl<strong>an</strong>ds, Vassilis Georgakopoulos <strong>an</strong>d Haris Kouris <strong>in</strong>
