Arts and SciencesARTS ANDSCIENCESDIVISIONPROGRAM INFORMATIONThe Arts and Sciences Division is comprised of sixdepartments: Comprehensive Studies, English, Humanities,Mathematics, Science, and Social Sciences. Twoassociate degrees are offered: Associate in Arts (AA) andAssociate in Science (AS). In addition, a General StudiesCertificate is offered.TRANSFER TO OTHER COLLEGESEntrance requirements for transfer students vary widelyamong senior colleges. Many colleges require a gradepoint average (GPA) of 2.5 at the two-year college. Theyprefer students whose records reflect work toward amajor and are free of grades of W, WF, or F (see GradeDefinitions). Students have the responsibility, with theassistance of their academic advisor, to plan their programof study to meet the requirements of the college towhich they expect to transfer. Transfer bulletins showingequivalent courses are available in the Arts and SciencesDivision Office in Oconee Hall. Courses similar to thoseoffered at public and private senior colleges are usuallytransferable if a student makes a grade of “C” or higher.Generally, courses taken at <strong>Tri</strong>-<strong>County</strong> will not substitutefor 300- or 400-level courses required for a major at asenior college.SCHEDULING AND ENTRY OPTIONSDay, evening, and on-line classes are available. Althoughmajor courses start in the Fall Semester, students mayenter any term. Full-time day students usually completedegree requirements in four semesters. Part-timestudents, day or evening, should allow at least eightconsecutive terms to earn a degree. Certificate studentscan complete their requirements in less time dependingon how many courses are taken each term. The sequenceof courses students take will vary depending upon thecollege to which they plan to transfer and their major.Some general guidelines for students include (1) Newstudents should take any preparatory courses during thefirst term; (2) First year students should enroll in <strong>College</strong>Skills (COL 103), an introduction to college and collegesurvival skills; (3) Students should begin basic coursessuch as English, mathematics, and science as soon as possible;(4) Students should delay taking a foreign languageuntil the second year unless they have taken a foreignlanguage in high school; (5) Employed students shouldconsider taking a reduced load.students the opportunity to complete the first twoyears of college work at <strong>Tri</strong>-<strong>County</strong> <strong>Technical</strong> <strong>College</strong>and then transfer to a four-year institution to completetheir bachelor’s degree.
