The homeless count helps the communityunderstand the extent of homelessness in the region, the characteristics of the homeless population and mostimportantly, helps measure the impact of efforts to endhomelessness. This information will be provided to thestate Office of Research and Statistics who will createreports for the U.S. Department of Housing and UrbanDevelopment (HUD), the federal agency that providesfunding for homeless projects. This data will be used toplan and implement effective services that will assist theefforts to end homelessness. Why is the count in late January? To reduce the risk of counting people more than once,HUD is asking all jurisdictions to conduct their countsin late January. In most regions of the country, lateJanuary is the time of the year when shelter use peaks.Counting and interviewing people sleeping in publicplaces during the winter months may lead to a morerealistic picture of chronically unsheltered homelesspeople. In addition, winter is the season when people aremost concerned about the ability of homeless people tosurvive. A count on one of the coldest nights of the yearcan be very effective in raising public awareness of thechallenges faced by homeless people without shelter.Homeless surveysA count of homeless on the street (those without shelter)will be taken by volunteers. While a count of those intransitional housing (shelters/motels/hotels) will beconducted by facility personnel.Do you provide homeless people housing during thecold weather by letting them stay in your hotel, motel orother shelter? If so, please help the homeless by collectingdata on Jan. 23. A homeless count form can be found attchc-web.org/homeless/motel. To have a form faxed toyou, call the Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality Associationat (843) 626-9668.h
