John StAubyn, was appointed Governor ofthe Mount following its surrender toParliamentarian <strong>for</strong>ces at the end ofthe Civil War.Twelve years later, he bought itand it became his private home.And so it stayed in the family <strong>for</strong>hundreds of years, handed downfrom generation to generation, untilin 1954 Francis St Aubyn gave it tothe National Trust in return <strong>for</strong> a999-year lease so his family couldcontinue to live there <strong>for</strong> as long intothe future as anyone dared look.The Newlyn School, basedin Newlyn, near Penzancein Mount’s Bay, was an artcommunity founded by artistswho settled here mostly fromthe dreary smog-filled streetsof London, and <strong>for</strong> whomthis natural landscape was arevelation.You can follow in theirfootsteps this summer as thenew Newlyn School of Art isteaming up with St Michael’sMount to provide two one-dayart courses in the dramaticsurroundings of the ramparts,gardens and harbour of theiconic island.The first one day course willbe held on Sunday May 27 2012and will be taught by local artistMaggie O’Brien.Maggie is a very experiencedteacher of short courses havingregularly taken painting groupsto the Scilly Isles and as far afieldas India.The second day will be held onSunday September 9 2012 andtaught by celebrated Marazionbasedartist Neil Pinkett whohas become well known <strong>for</strong> hiscoastal landscape paintings fromaround Britain.Neil was born in St Just,<strong>Cornwall</strong>, and has lived in thecounty most of his life.
