SOUTH CORNWALLPorthlevenA working Cornish fishingharbour, which in years gone byoften provided much-neededrefuge <strong>for</strong> ships in distress alongthis stretch of coast.Midway between Porthlevenand Gunwalloe is the Loe Pool,CAPE CORNWALLCape <strong>Cornwall</strong> is a small headland nearthe town of St Just jutting out into theAtlantic and topped off by a 140-year-oldchimney stack at one of the many localtin mines that have fallen into disuse. Itoffers great views out to sea and acrossthe Brisons, a series of underwater reefslying offshore which have been undoingof passing ships <strong>for</strong> centuries.Sennen CoveA short walk over the cliffs northwards fromLand’s End brings you to Sennen Cove, a milelongbay of golden sand, with plenty of rockpools at low tide on either side of beach.Its position on the coast just two miles fromSt Just and Cape <strong>Cornwall</strong>St Just is the nearest town to Land’s End andwas once a thriving centre <strong>for</strong> tin mining butlike other towns in the area, the loss of thatindustry hit hard.However, St Just survives by being agreat location <strong>for</strong> birdwatching and golf,two activities which draw visitors in theirthousands all year round.The three valleys of Nanquidno, Cot Valleyand Kenidjack surround St Just and arefamous among birdwatchers <strong>for</strong> throwingLand’s End means Sennen Cove picks up severalconflicting swells which make it an ideal place<strong>for</strong> surfing, especially at the northern end of thebeach. At a higher tide this can provide a goodshorebreak. There are usually a couple of goodup rare species – especially in the spring andautumn during key migration periods.Nanquidno is a beautifully secluded andunspoilt location, with a wooded uppervalley giving way to a rocky cove amongrugged cliffs.Cot Valley is a lush, sub-tropical valleywhile Kenidjack on the other side of Cape<strong>Cornwall</strong> is another wooded upper valleythat gives way to a rugged cove revealing<strong>for</strong>mer mine workings.peaks in the middle of the beach off the valleybut these are very much dependent on the stateof the banks.For the more experienced and adventurousthere is a reef about 100 metres off shore called44discover the extraordinary<strong>Cornwall</strong> Tourism Magazine in association with www.cornwalltouristpass.com
