Data are based on application counts rather thanequivalent application counts. 22 In terms of absolute numbers,residents of the US (15,593) filed the largest numberof applications abroad in 2011, followed by residents ofJapan (14,384) and the Republic of Korea (4,388).However, the numbers of applications filed abroad byresidents of China, India and the Russian Federation – allmiddle-income countries – have grown at faster rates thanthose of Japan and the US. Despite substantial growth,residents of these origins filed only a small proportion oftheir applications abroad. Figure 6 shows applicationsabroad as a percentage of resident applications. Forexample, Chinese residents filed 0.5% of their applicationsabroad.
