CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF HOSE (continued)Care and Maintenance of Hose (continued)StorageRubber hose products in storage can be affected adversely bytemperature, humidity, ozone, sunlight, oils, solvents, corrosiveliquids and fumes, insects, rodents and radioactive materials. The appropriate method for storing hose depends to a greatextent on its size (diameter and length), the quantity to be storedand the way in which it is packaged. Hose should not be piled orstacked to such an extent that the weight of the stack creates distortionson the length stored at the bottom.Since hose products vary considerably in size, weight andlength, it is not practical to establish definite recommendations onthis point. Hose having a very light wall will not support as muchload as could a hose having a heavier wall or hose having a wirereinforcement. Hose which is shipped in coils or bales should bestored so that the coils are in a horizontal plane.Whenever feasible, rubber hose products should be stored intheir original shipping containers, especially when such containersare wooden crates or cardboard cartons which provide some protectionagainst the deteriorating effects of oils, solvents and corrosiveliquids; shipping containers also afford some protectionagainst ozone and sunlight.Certain rodents and insects will damage rubber hose productsand adequate protection from them should be provided.Cotton jacketed hose should be protected against fungalgrowths if the hose is to be stored for prolonged periods in humidconditions in excess of 70 percent. The ideal temperature for the storage of rubber productsranges for 50º to 70ºF (10-21ºC) with a maximum limit of 100ºF(38ºC). If stored below 32ºF (0ºC), some rubber products becomestiff and would require warming before being placed in service.Rubber products should not be stored near sources of heat, such asradiators, base heaters, etc., nor should they be stored under conditionsof high or low humidity. To avoid the adverse effects of high ozone concentration, rubberhose products should not be stored near electrical equipmentthat may generate ozone or be stored for any lengthy period ingeographical areas of known high ozone concentration. Hoseshould not be stored in locations where the ozone level exceedsthe National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health’s upperlimits of 0.10 ppm. Exposure to direct or reflected sunlight – eventhrough windows – should also be avoided. Uncovered hoseshould not be stored under fluorescent or mercury lamps whichgenerate light waves harmful to rubber.Storage areas should be relatively cool and dark, and free ofdampness and mildew. Items should be stored on a first-in, firstoutbasis, since even under the best of conditions, an unusuallylong shelf life could deteriorate certain rubber products.Decimal and Millimeter Equivalents of FractionsInchesInchesFractions Decimals Millimeters Fractions Decimals Millimeters1/64 ----------------------------------------1/32 -------------------------3/64 ----------------------------------------1/16 -----------5/64 ----------------------------------------3/32 -------------------------7/64 ----------------------------------------1/8 -------------9/64 ----------------------------------------5/32 -------------------------11/64 --------------------------------------.015625.03125.046875.0625.078125.09375.109375.125.140625.15625.171875.397.7941.1911.5881.9842.3812.7783.1753.5723.9694.36633/64----------------------------------17/32-------------------35/64 ---------------------------------9/16 ------37/64 ---------------------------------19/32 ------------------39/64 ---------------------------------5/8 --------41/64 ---------------------------------21/32 ------------------43/64----------------------------------.515625.53125.546875.5625.578125.59375.609375.625.640625.65625.67187513.09713.49413.89114.28814.68415.08115.47815.87516.27216.66917.0663/16 ----------- .18754.76311/16 ----- .687517.46313/64 --------------------------------------7/32 -------------------------15/64 --------------------------------------1/4 -------------17/64 --------------------------------------9/32 -------------------------19/64 --------------------------------------5/16 -----------21/64 --------------------------------------11/32 -----------------------23/64 --------------------------------------.203125.21875.234375.250.265625.28125.296875.3125.328125.34375.3593755.1595.5565.9536.3506.7477.1447.5417.9388.3348.7319.12845/64 ---------------------------------23/32 ------------------47/64 ---------------------------------3/4 --------49/64 ---------------------------------25/32-------------------51/64----------------------------------13/16-----53/64----------------------------------27/32-------------------55/64 ---------------------------------.703125.71875.734375.750.765625.78125.796875.8125.828125.84375.85937517.85918.25618.65319.05019.44719.84420.24120.63821.03421.43121.8283/8 ------------- .3759.5257/8--------- .87522.22525/64 --------------------------------------13/32------------------------27/64---------------------------------------7/16------------29/64-------------------------------------15/32----------------------31/64-------------------------------------1/2------------.390625.40625.421875.4375.453125.46875.484375.5009.92210.31910.71611.11311.50911.90612.30312.70057/64----------------------------------29/32-------------------59/64----------------------------------15/16-----61/64--------------------------------31/32-----------------63/64--------------------------------1---------.890625.90625.921875.9375.953125.96875.9843751.00022.62223.01923.41623.81324.20924.60625.00325.400Powering Progress. gates.com/industrialhose 21
