Clinical services are provided in the church branches in Jos, Zaria, Abuja, Akwa and Lagos. Positive people are referred to facilities in these cities. The church has a clinic within its premises in Abuja, and provides integrated services to clients. Services at the Center are provided to clients irrespective of their faith. Both Christians and Muslims are provided with free treatment and counseling. Majority of those that come for counseling are young couples that plan to get married and want know their status. They also have had men having sex with men (MSM) come for counseling. They promote the use condoms among married and discordant couples but promote abstinence among youths. Summary Comments As mentioned above, the very large numbers of FBOs constitute a rich inventory of potential participants in the comprehensive GHAIN program. Any plans to involve some of these FBOs should pay close attention to the variations in their religious orientations, their different philosophical-moral attitudes, and styles of operation. They would appear to be particularly important in relation to care and support, including home-based care. 30
"Hot Spots" or Areas of Concentration of High Risk Behaviors. During the social mapping and key informant interviewing, the main "hot spots" of sexual activity were identified by the various key informants, and were plotted onto our master map. The areas of greater commercial sex work activity are quite many in the FCT, but the primary patterns are as follows: A. Military barracks are major points of sexual activity, particularly as each barracks has associated with it a "Mami Market," in which there are beer parlors, and other services, with considerable night-time commercial sex activity. Most of the military barracks are along the Outer Northern Express Road that skirts the northern edge of the Abuja metropolitan area. B. Major market areas are also areas of commercial sexual activity, particularly if the trucks that supply them have parking areas nearby, so that the truckers stay some time in the area. C. Some low income residential areas, or "slums," have become areas of commercial sex work, as the populations of poor families are crowded together, with many women finding a need to engage in sex work to maintain their family incomes. As certain such areas become known as "places with many sex workers," and increased numbers of beer parlors and small hotels spring up, they attract clients from other areas. D. The University campus at Gwagwalada was mentioned by a number of informants as an area of major sex work activity, as increased numbers of female students have turned to sex work in order to have sufficient money for tuition and other expenses. In addition, as the area has attracted increased numbers of male clients, (according to key informants) many non-student young women have moved into the area, in part posing as students, in order to take advantage of the supposedly higher rates they could charge for sexual services in that area. E. Major highway junction points, or truck/bus terminal points are usually favored places for sex workers. The FCT area does not have many such terminal or junction points, except for two or three, of which Zuba is the largest and best known. Zuba is at the junction where the Outer Northern Expressway from the east meets the major North-South highway that bisects the FCT. Gwagwalada is also a major junction point, where the Southern Express Road joins the North- South highway. That highway traffic, especially the long distance drivers, add to the intensity of commercial sex activity of the Gwagwalada area. 31
