the open beer bars that are prominent in the night life of the area.) Sex workers hutments are generally one-room, made of mud, but plastered on the outside with cement, according to informants. The floor is dirt; and the roof is generally of corrugated metal. Such hutments are easily erected, and even more easily torn down, as many have been torn down to make room for the larger houses being built in the area. As seen on the map of the Nyanya area, there are a number of small clinics of medical practitioners, as well as the Panraf "hospital" at one end of the Obalende area. (Also see notes on Nyanya). The "hotels" in terms of the HIV/AIDS phenomenon include NO.1 Hotel, Kasham Hotel, and De- Gorges Hotel and Night Club. Although there are no open bars in the day time, the activity opens up in the night when tables and chairs are brought out by the shop people who sell assorted drinks. Map 2. In the rough draft map, above, "H" refers to hotels, the + marks are clinics, and we note the Panraf Hospital on the right hand side, across the street from the Obalende "hotspot" area of activities. Medium sized Hotspots Each of the military barracks (mainly located along the Outer Northern Express Highway) has an associated Mami market, and related commercial sex activities (see Map 1, page 7) Our informants considered those to be "medium sized," as compared to the larger concentrations in the first group. Also, two or three residential areas in Bwari were considered to be "medium," including Bwari town and Mpape (close to metropolitan Abuja). The Mami Market is a large square with a circular road that rings the inside of the market. Along the road are many shops including beer parlors and restaurants, but mostly dry goods (housewares, shoes, clothes). Inside the circle behind the stores are beer parlors and pepper soup joints and suya (barbeque) spots making an inner circle. There were no other types of stores in this area. Other beer parlors could be found in the four corners of the market . In every beer parlor is a TV set where people come to watch movies and other shows throughout the evening, so that women and children will go to the parlors as well as men who come to drink. In fact, the TVs are one of the biggest attractions of the mami market after dark. We entered one beer parlor and ordered grilled fish and watched soldiers come to the various drinking spots to relax with their friends after work. We did not observe any sex work activity, but it was early (6 pm) and sex workers usually begin to appear after dark. [Informant] told us that many of these men are not necessarily looking for sex, but rather just socializing with friends. (Excerpt from field notes). PROFILE OF MPAPE TOWN (Medium-sized hotspot) Just off the main highway, on the southern edge of Bwari administrative area. (Information assembled by Samuel Egwu. Some of the history here is from his personal knowledge, as he lived in Abuja for a year in 2003). Mpape was identified by the key informant in Bwari as a "hot spot" with a large number of sex workers, and a lot of bars, small hotels, and other features related to night life and risky sexual activities. After a visit to Bwari town, the administrative headquarter of Bwari Area Council on Tuesday, November 31, 2004, the team decided to pay a familiarization visit to Mpape, a location that was mentioned as important in the context of HIV/AIDS programming in the Area Council in the course 35
