trainingaccreditationanzca traineecommitteeANZCA accredits hospital departments of anaesthesia and other facilitiesthat comply with its requirements for recognition. Accredited departmentsand facilities must be incorporated into a rotational training scheme andthere must be the opportunity for experience in a rural centre. A groupingof hospitals providing such a program of specialty and sub-specialtytraining constitutes a training program. ANZCA accredits both publicand private facilities.The ANZCA Trainee Committee (TC) is a Committee of Council and isresponsible for considering issues relating to training. The trainee membersare elected from every training region of ANZCA and are supported byCollege staff and councillors. The 2010 Trainee Committee held four meetings,including one face-to-face day at ANZCA House. The committee is a centralpoint of contact for the College to obtain trainee opinion and delegatesfor specific roles.In 2010, 33 facilities were inspected inAustralia and New Zealand. Four of thesewere new accreditations.The following projects are ongoing:• Workload calculations.• Certificate of Approval.Courses Working GroupThe Courses Working Group oversees therunning of courses, which are approvedby Council for ANZCA trainees, andwhere satisfactory completion is anintegral requirement for the awardingof the ANZCA fellowship. The onlysuch course at present is the EffectiveManagement of Anaesthetic Crises(EMAC) course. This is owned byANZCA, and simulation centres acrossAustralia, New Zealand and south-eastAsia are accredited and licensed to offerthe course to ANZCA trainees and otherparticipants.Three simulation centres were reviewedin 2010, and continuing accreditationwas granted to all. There were no newapplications.New Programs CommitteeThe New Programs Committee (NPC)oversees the management of certificatesoffered by ANZCA. Its responsibilitiesinclude consideration of applications fornew certificate programs, monitoringof certificate programs, accreditation ofthe training programs and facilities, andrecommendations to the Council forcertification of practitioners. Currently theonly such certificate is the Certificate inDiving and Hyperbaric Medicine (DHM).No new DHM units were grantedaccreditation in 2010 and one DHM unitlost its accreditation in 2010.There were no new applications foraccreditation in 2010.Trainee representation on CouncilThe ANZCA Trainee Committee isgrateful for the ongoing supportreceived from councillors and ANZCAstaff throughout 2010. The chair of thecommittee was invited this year to be anobserver at Council meetings. This hasbeen an interesting, albeit challenging,adventure. Consultation with thecommittee has continued to be frequentand widespread with good trainee inputinto most ANZCA arenas and certainly allof those that directly relate to training.ANZCA trainees have been wellrepresented on a large number ofcommittees and working groups andin many of the new ANZCA initiativesincluding:• The Assessments, Workplace BasedAssessments and Education andTraining Committees.• The new Examinations Committee.• The Training and AssessmentsCommittee.• The development of ANZCA’scurriculum redesign project.• The new in-training assessment(ITA) form and ITA process roll out.• Testing the new trainee email systemdue out in 2011.Trainees continued to be involvedin working groups that have woundup, including the Clinical TeachersDevelopment and Distance EducationWorking Groups. Trainees were alsoinvolved in the welfare for anaesthestistsand perioperative medicine specialinterest groups.The ANZCA Trainee Committee hascontinued to develop its relationshipswith the Group of Australian Societyof Anaesthetists Clinical Trainees(GASACT) and New Zealand Societyof Anaesthetists (NZSA) traineerepresentatives. The committee has alsobeen represented at the AMA Councilof Doctors in Training and the inauguraltraining day at the Australian Societyof Anaesthetists (ASA) NationalScientific Congress.Committee membership 2010An ANZCA Trainee Committee manualhas been prepared and circulated tothe 2010 committee to facilitate thecontinuation of our good work into2011 and to make the inevitable loss ofcorporate knowledge less detrimental.We have worked on systems of improvingthe handover of communication andhave set the date for the 2011 face-to-facemeeting well in advance.Dr Kathryn HagenChair, ANZCA Trainee Committee20 ANZCA Annual Report 2010ANZCA Annual Report 2010 21
fellowshipaffairsThe ANZCA continuing professional development (CPD) program recordeda participation rate of 80 per cent in 2010. This is an increase of 10 percent over the previous year. Faculty of Pain Medicine (FPM) participationhas improved greatly from 48.3 per cent to 77 per cent. The breakdownof participation by location is summarised below.The number of non-Fellows who areundertaking the program from outsidethe profession has decreased by 4.4per cent. The themeof the meeting was “Airway weekend”and interest from the healthcare industry(HCI) was extremely positive with 11exhibitors involved in the meeting.The Day Care SIG Conference was heldon April 30, 2010 at the ChristchurchTown Hall, New Zealand. Seventy ninedelegates and four HCI exhibitorsregistered to attend the meeting whichwas themed “Day surgery – is it foreveryone?”The Rural SIG held its third annualmeeting on Hamilton Island from July 4-6with the theme “Jack of all trades”. Themeeting was well supported with morethan 100 delegates and a larger numberof exhibitors than in previous yearsproving the concept of an annual meetingwith a rural focus has support amongFellows of the College as well as generalpractitioner anaesthetists who accountedfor almost a third of the delegates.The Neuroanaesthesia SIG conferencetook place from July 9-11 at the SheratonMirage, Port Douglas, Queensland.A total of 106 Fellows registered withfive trade displays complementing themeeting. The conference was consideredvery successful by all attendees witha highlight being the keynote speakerProfessor Adrian Gelb from the US.The Combined Education, Simulation,Welfare and Management SIG Meetinghad 125 registrants and was held atthe Sheraton Mirage, Port Douglas,Queensland from September 24-26.22 ANZCA Annual Report 2010ANZCA Annual Report 2010 23
