Dr RobertAlbert Boas has also been awarded theNew Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM),Queen’s New Year’s Honours forservices to medicine, in particular painmanagement.Queen’s Birthday Honours (Australia)Three Australian Fellows were recognisedfor their contributions to anaesthesia andmedical education with the award of aMember of the Order of Australia (AM)in the general division of the Queen’sBirthday honours list.Professor Teik Ewe Oh for service tomedicine, particularly through thedevelopment of protocols for thespecialties of anaesthesia and intensivecare, through leadership rolesin clinical and academic practice, andwith professional bodies.Dr Haydn Perndt for service to medicine,particularly in the field of anaesthesia,to medical education through thedesign and implementation of trainingprograms for health care practitioners indeveloping countries, and to professionalorganisations.Dr Lindsay Ian Worthley for service tomedical education, particularly in thearea of intensive care medicine, as aclinician, mentor and educator, andthrough contributions to professionalassociations.Queen’s Birthday Honours(New Zealand)Dr Leona Wilson was honoured withan Officer of the New Zealand Orderof Merit (ONZM) in the New ZealandQueen’s birthday honours list for servicesto medicine, in particular anaesthesia.Throughout 2010 the College continued to build ANZCA’s standing andcontribution to public policy. Growth in the College’s policy capability overthe last three years is now reaping the rewards of hard work in the formof increasing requests for submissions and related policy developmentactivities. The level of engagement continues to increase as evidencedby ANZCA’s involvement in the array of consultations, committees andworking groups that shape policy.Highlights• Increasing growth in the number ofsubmissions, from 28 in 2009 to 44in 2010.• Ongoing involvement and input into thenational registration and accreditationscheme and new Medical Board ofAustralia (MBA) policy development.• Coordination and referral of increasingrequests on clinical practice standardsand related issues from Fellows andother stakeholders (150).• Development of a comprehensivecommunity representation policy forANZCA and recruitment of additionalcommunity representatives.• Review of professional documentsstatus and associated developmentof a policy framework, in conjunctionwith a newly appointed Director ofProfessional Affairs.• Increased interaction and improvedrelationship with the AustralianGovernment Department of Health andAgeing, including doubling of SpecialistTraining Program training places inprivate hospitals and other expandedsettings, from 13 to 25 for 2011.• Participation in the National Pain Summitin March 2010 and the developmentof supporting documents.SubmissionsThe number and diversity of submissionsprepared by ANZCA continued toincrease in 2010, in response to callsfrom government and related agencies.Through the submission process ANZCAarticulated its position on issues thatimpact on trainees, Fellows, the healthsystem and broader community, drawingon the expertise available within ANZCAand the Faculty of Pain Medicine on thepractice of anaesthesia, pain medicineand related areas.During 2010, ANZCA made 44submissions to bodies including theAustralian Government Departmentof Health and Ageing, the Senate, theNational Health and Medical ResearchCouncil, the Australian Medical Council,the Medical Board of Australia and theAustralian Commission for Safety andQuality in Health Care, on a variety oftopics.
