James F. and Mary Asher Tearney, ’58Established the Asher-Tearney Legacy Scholarship for Education and Engineering andJames F. and Mary Asher Tearney Fund for Library ResourcesMembers of The Founders ClubIn celebration of her 50 th anniversaryas a Missouri State alumna, MaryAsher Tearney and her husband,James, established two endowments.The Asher-Tearney Legacy Scholarshipfor Education and Engineering willbe awarded to an undergraduatestudent from southwest Missouri who isstudying engineering or education, thefields in which James and Mary heldrewarding careers.“We’re leaving a legacy,” MaryTearney said. She stays connected tocampus thanks to relatives who havechosen to continue the tradition ofbeing a Bear. In fact, she had a cousinand a great-niece on campus in 2009.“I think if other alumni came to thecampus and saw the wonderful thingsthe University is doing they would alsowant to feel a part of the Universityagain through giving.”The second endowment, the JamesF. and Mary Asher Tearney Fund forLibrary Resources, will provide annualfunds to purchase resource materials.“It’s been a wonderful ride and itwas all the result of a scholarship givento a 16-year-old girl in 1949 to let hercome to college.
