Dear Alumni, Donors and Friends of Missouri State:Foundation MessageThere was no logical reason that the Missouri State University Foundationshould have set a record in 2008-09, receiving more than $15 million in gifts. But it did. After all, the economy was shrinking most of the 12 months between July 1,2008, and June 30, 2009. The market fell. People struggled to keep their jobs. Inmany quarters, optimism was replaced with pessimism. There was no logical reason that thousands of Missouri State alumni investedin the University at a time when there were plenty of excuses to skip a year. Butthey did.Even as the economy began to come back, businesses, organizations andindividuals were proceeding cautiously. We all knew that the economic recoverywould be slow. And there was no logical reason that the number of endowed facultypositions, student scholarships, special program funds and every other fundcategory should have grown over the past year, given the economy. But theydid, bucking the regional and national trend. It’s true that there were no logical reasons for the record year. But anyonewho knows Missouri State University alumni and friends should not besurprised. The thousands of donors, who support Missouri State University, lovethe University, understand the importance of a college degree to the future ofour country, and know that now, more than ever, is when private donationsmake a difference. Many of our alumni benefited from a privately funded scholarship when theywent to this University. It changed their lives. Now they want to do the same fortoday’s student. Our donors have fond memories of favorite professors who they now wantto honor with a scholarship or endowed chair or professorship. It is a way ofperpetuating the memory of a teacher who made a difference in their careersand lives.Among our donors are business owners and executives who hire ourgraduates and are so taken with their skill and work ethic that they want tosupport future students, the academic program that prepared them and theprofessors who taught them. And, of course, alumni and friends want to support the various specialprograms that provide entertainment, enjoyment and points of pride: the PrideBand, debate and intercollegiate athletics are just three examples. So, the purpose of this letter is to say “thank you.” Thank you for your recordsupport of Missouri State in a year that was a difficult one for the vast majorityof colleges and universities in the country. You make a difference to ourstudents, our faculty and our academic programs. We are a better Universitybecause of your generosity. You make us want to do better so that we live up toyour confidence in us.Best regards,Michael T. NietzelJoe TurnerW. Upon the passing of the lastsurviving beneficiary, Missouri StateUniversity will use any remainingannuity assets to support the programyou designated when you establishedthe CGA.• Deferred gift annuity — A deferredcharitable gift annuity is similar toa charitable gift annuity except thatthe payments are deferred to a futuredate. A donor may defer payments toyears when income is needed more, such as retirement. The donor obtainsa substantial charitable income taxdeduction in the year that the gift ismade. Because payments are deferred, allowing the principal to grow, thedonor enjoys a high payout rate later.A deferred gift annuity is an excellentway to make a gift and receive acharitable income tax deduction whileproviding income for the future.Regardless of your age or thetiming of the income, you can take thecharitable deduction for a portion ofthe gift in the year you make the gift.A portion of the payments you receiveeach year may also be exempt fromcertain income taxes.36. 2009 Annual ReportMissouri State University Foundation 37.

Gifts That Pass Assets to Heirs —When you create a charitable leadtrust, the initial or “lead” interest ispaid out to Missouri State annuallyfor either a predetermined number ofyears or for the duration of your life.Thereafter, the assets of the lead trustare either returned to you or passedon to your children, grandchildren,or other loved ones. If the assets areto be returned to you, you receive anincome tax deduction when the trustis created. If the assets are passed onto heirs, applicable estate or gift taxeson the value of the gift are reduced orcompletely eliminated.A charitable lead trust can be apowerful tool in gift and estate taxplanning, but the technical complexitiesrequire careful consideration. TheMissouri State University Foundationis glad to work with you and yourfinancial advisors to see if a charitablelead trust is the right plan for you. There are many ways in which toprovide support and help build thefuture of Missouri State University. Each and every gift helps ensurethat we fulfill our mission. For additional information onFoundation guidelines for particulartypes of gifts, we invite you to contactus at:Missouri State University FoundationKenneth E.
