For uncompromisingquality, Nichia recently released theNVSx219A line with conformalphosphor coating to provide the bestpossible color consistency over thedistribution angle. According to thecompany’s statement, this line of highintensity point source LEDs offersunprecedented luminous efficacy,source brightness, a compact footprintof a mere 3.5 mm x 3.5 mm, andsuperior color quality. In addition,Nichia added and upgraded the morebudget priced NS Power LED Serieswhite the 183A and the more compact153AM type LEDs to serve costsensitive main stream applications ingeneral lighting.Unlike most other companiesEpistar’s main interest is in selling theLED chips and supporting their clientswith Epistar’s know-how in theproduct development, whether theyproduce packaged LEDs, COB LEDsand LED modules, replacement lampsor complete luminaires and lightingsystems. Epistar featured its HVblue-red LED system for high CRI andhighly efficient white light generation.When two red LED chips and twoblue LED chips are connected inseries, the maximum luminanceefficiency is 120 lm/W at 140 V and20 mA, having a CRI of approximately90 for a 2700 K warm white LEDsystem, according to the companyspokesperson. This design with aclose voltage match to the mainsvoltages (110 V or 230 V) allows driversolutions with better costs andperformance than low voltagesystems. Epistar planned to startsample shipments in July 2011 andvolume shipments in September 2011.Final ThoughtsCompared to previous years, wherewe mostly saw products forcommercial use, most exhibitors alsobrought products for residentiallighting applications with them. Wethink this means that the LEDluminaire and replacement bulbmanufacturers feel that the time is ripefor moving into the consumer market.Publicized announcements ofcompanies prove DoE’s prognosisregarding the price development ofLED products while the efficiency andlumen/package have exceeded theDoE prognosis for a while.
