Administrative Terms <strong>and</strong> ProceduresInstructor Certification—An endorsement of an instructor to teach for the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>jurisdiction. An instructor is certified to teach once he or she has successfully completed an <strong>American</strong><strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> instructor training course.Authorized Provider—An outside company, organization or individual that provides <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>instructional programs as outlined in the signed Authorized Provider Agreement.Authorized Provider Agreement—An agreement between the <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> <strong>and</strong> an outside company,organization or individual that provides <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> instructional programs outlining the responsibilities ofeach party.Authorized Provider Instructor—A certified instructor who teaches <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> courses underthe supervision of an authorized provider. (See also Authorized Provider.)Certificate—Formal recognition that an individual has successfully completed an <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>course.Certified—Term used to describe the circumstance when a course participant successfully completes an<strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> course <strong>and</strong> is issued a completion certificate.Code of Conduct—A code that all employees <strong>and</strong> volunteers of the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> , whendelivering <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> services, shall meet. Every certified <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> instructor signs it, as partof the Instructor Agreement, <strong>and</strong> it serves as a general agreement between the instructor <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Red</strong><strong>Cross</strong>.Co-Teach—Sharing full participation in course leadership <strong>and</strong> instruction with one or more co-instructors;also known as team teaching.Course of Record—A course taught, properly reported <strong>and</strong> accepted by the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> wherethe course was conducted.Course Record—A form that is completed by an instructor <strong>and</strong> turned in within 10 business days aftercourse completion to the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>. This record is used to document certificate issuance,instructor- teaching activity <strong>and</strong> service activity for statistical reports.Course Record Addendum—A form that lists information on participants <strong>and</strong> grades received for acourse. It is completed <strong>and</strong> submitted along wit the Course Record.Instructor—A member of a select group of trained <strong>and</strong> certified individuals who reflect the st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong>ideals of the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> by teaching <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> programs <strong>and</strong> imparting knowledge <strong>and</strong> skillsconsistent with <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> policies, procedures, st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> guidelines.Instructor Agreement—A form to be signed by certified instructors to teach <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>courses. It explains the rights <strong>and</strong> responsibilities of both the instructor <strong>and</strong> the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>. Italso contains the Code of Conduct.Instructor Aide—An individual who successfully completes instructor-aide training to help an instructorwith a basic-level course. Instructor aides must work under an instructor that is actively teaching the1


course. Instructor aides assist instructors in clerical, supervisory, instructional <strong>and</strong> maintenance tasks, butthey cannot evaluate participants or determine participant eligibility for certification.Instructor Trainer (IT)—A member of a select group of individuals who exemplify the qualities of the<strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> <strong>and</strong> serve as role models for instructors <strong>and</strong> other instructor trainers. ITs arecertified by the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> to teach <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> instructor courses. An IT often assiststhe local <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> with training updates, recruitment or other leadership responsibilities.Minimum Enrollment for Courses—Each course must have enough participants to provide courseparticipants with sufficient skills practice to accomplish the course objectives.Participant Grading Criteria—• Successful is entered for a participant who has attended all class sessions, participated in all courseactivities, passed all the required course skills <strong>and</strong> passed the required scenario—assessments.• Unsuccessful is entered for a participant who has not met course objectives <strong>and</strong>/or does notsuccessfully attend all class sessions, participate in all course activities, complete all the r requiredskills <strong>and</strong>/or complete the scenario—assessments <strong>and</strong> prefers not to be retested or does not pass aretest.• Not Evaluated should be entered as the final grade for a participant who is not attending the coursewith intent to receive a completion certificate. The participant, with approval from the instructor, isallowed to choose his or her own level of participation in the course. This should not be substituted foran Unsuccessful for a participant who attempts certification but is unable to pass the completionrequirements. A participant who chooses to audit must make his or her intent known to the instructorat the beginning of the class.Recertification of Instructors <strong>and</strong> Instructor Trainers—To become recertified by teaching or coteachingat least one course during a 2-year certification period, as well as, successfully complete anonline knowledge assessment.Suspension—The temporary withholding of an instructor’s certification by the local <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong>while formal steps are undertaken to determine whether to continue to withdraw the instructor’scertification.Volunteer—An individual who, beyond the confines of paid employment <strong>and</strong> normal responsibilities,contributes time <strong>and</strong> service to the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> to assist in the accomplishment of its mission.Withdrawal of Authorization—The removal of an instructor’s certification to teach for the <strong>American</strong> <strong>Red</strong><strong>Cross</strong> for due cause. Due cause generally means the instructor does not or will not abide by thest<strong>and</strong>ards, policies or procedures of the <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> organization <strong>and</strong> its programs or in some way abusesthe position as an authorized <strong>Red</strong> <strong>Cross</strong> instructor.2
