LUTEIN-Z TM WITH ANTIOXIDANTSUPC CODE 0 646420 4883 7NATURAL HEALTH PRODUCTSDIRECTORATE (NHPD) CLAIMS:Jamieson Lutein-Z with Antioxidants is pendingapproval for the following NHPD claims:• Helps to maintain eyesight in conditionsassociated with sunlight damage, such ascataracts and age-related macular degeneration• Provides antioxidants for the maintenance ofgood healthGENERAL INFORMATIONJamieson Lutein-Z contains a complex ofconcentrated lutein and zeaxanthin derived frommarigold flowers to support eye health. This newone-a-day formula provides 10 milligrams of luteinper capsule, and is made from vegetarian ingredients.Jamieson Lutein-Z also contains a blend ofantioxidants that aid in the maintenance of goodhealth.Lutein and its stereoisomer zeaxanthin are twocarotenoids that play a critical role in themaintenance of normal visual function. Thesecompounds are the predominant carotenoids in themacula (centre of the eye’s retina), and it is themacula that is responsible for fine, detailed vision.High concentrations of lutein and zeaxanthin areresponsible for the yellowish colour of the macula, and they are also the predominant carotenoids in thelens of the eye. Lutein and zeaxanthin impart yelloworangecolours to fruits and vegetables such aspumpkin and red peppers. They are also found indark green vegetables, although the green pigment, chlorophyll, masks their colours.Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is themost common cause of irreversible vision loss andlegal blindness among older adults. It is adegenerative condition of the macula, the region ofthe retina that is responsible for detailed and centralvision. Prevalence of ARMD increases with age, andonce in its later stages, ARMD usually cannot besuccessfully treated. This leads to vision loss thatcannot be restored, and therefore, prevention ofARMD is very important. There is evidence tosuggest that dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthincan help to reduce the risk for ARMD.Lutein and zeaxanthin may protect against ARMD intwo ways. Firstly, each of these compounds has theability to absorb light, and secondly, they bothfunction as antioxidants and help quench freeradicals. Lutein and zeaxanthin are concentrated inthe area of the retina where light exposure is mostintense, and therefore, they may help protect againstlight damage over many years. These pigments act asa filter to protect eye structures from the damagingeffects of the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) light. Lutein andzeaxanthin also prevent free radicals from damagingthe retina, since these reactive oxygen species areparticularly high in this region of the eye. This iscaused by sunlight, which promotes the developmentof free radicals, and leads to a high rate of oxidativemetabolism in the body.Grape seeds are a rich source of bioflavonoids, whichhave antioxidant activity. These antioxidants arecalled oligomeric procyanidins (OPCs) the mostactive of which seem to be the leucoanthocyanins. The antioxidant activity of leucoanthocyanins ingrape seed extract has been demonstrated in severalexperimental models.Bilberry fruit contains contains flavonoid compoundsknown as anthocyanosides, which are also powerfulantioxidants that help protect cells from damagecaused by free radicals. Bilberry is important formaintaining healthy vision, and is also useful fortreating various eye disorders, including cataracts andARMD.Ginkgo biloba is an antioxidant that is beneficial forthe circulatory system, as it helps to increase the flowof oxygen-rich blood to various parts of the body. Itis thought that ginkgo biloba may be useful fortreating ARMD because of its ability to increase theflow of blood to nerve-rich fibres in the eyes. For Accidental Overdose (such as child ingesting formula)Dial 911, ask for operator assistance or call your nearest Poison Control CentreFor Professional Use OnlyThe information contained here has been accumulated from many sources.Indications are not intended as cures, they are simply a guideline to be used at your professional discretion. For more information please visit www.jamiesonvitamins.com or call 1-800-265-5088 to speak to a Consumer Affairs representative.07/30/10
