Pr<strong>in</strong>t Pagehttp://www.coll<strong>in</strong>gwoodconnection.com/BarrieAdvance/pr<strong>in</strong>tArticle?ass...1 of 1 2/6/2009 7:22 AMWasaga Beach man <strong>charged</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>child</strong> <strong>porn</strong> raidsFebruary 05, 2009A Wasaga Beach man was <strong>among</strong> those <strong>charged</strong> <strong>in</strong> what police say is the <strong>largest</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ce-wide <strong>child</strong> <strong>porn</strong>ography<strong>in</strong>vestigation <strong>in</strong> Ontario's history.Mark Caron, 38, is <strong>charged</strong> with two counts of possession of <strong>child</strong> <strong>porn</strong>ography and one count of mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>child</strong><strong>porn</strong>ography available.He was scheduled to appear today <strong>in</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>cial court <strong>in</strong> Barrie.OPP Commissioner Julian Fant<strong>in</strong>o announced at a press conference <strong>in</strong> Toronto earlier today a total of 93 charges hadbeen laid aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>31</strong> people after police executed 33 search warrants <strong>in</strong> raids across the prov<strong>in</strong>ce yesterday.Charges <strong>in</strong>clude sexual assault, sexual <strong>in</strong>terference, mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>child</strong> <strong>porn</strong>ography, mak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>child</strong> <strong>porn</strong>ography available,distribut<strong>in</strong>g <strong>child</strong> <strong>porn</strong>ography and possession of <strong>child</strong> <strong>porn</strong>ography.Two victims, a four-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl, were identified dur<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>vestigation.The raids were executed by police services <strong>in</strong> 18 municipalities, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Barrie, as part of the Prov<strong>in</strong>cial Strategy toProtect Children from Sexual Assault and Exploitation on the Internet.S<strong>in</strong>ce the strategy was implemented <strong>in</strong> August 2006 at the request of the prov<strong>in</strong>cial government, police have laid1,983 charges aga<strong>in</strong>st 634 people as a result of 4,782 <strong>in</strong>vestigations.The Child Sexual Exploitation Section of the OPP <strong>in</strong>vestigated another 996 cases, result<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> 392 charges be<strong>in</strong>g laidaga<strong>in</strong>st 144 people.“The most fundamental responsibility of our society is to protect our <strong>child</strong>ren,” said Fant<strong>in</strong>o at the press conference.“The Ontario police services associated with the prov<strong>in</strong>cial strategy will stop at noth<strong>in</strong>g to hunt down <strong>child</strong> predatorsand elim<strong>in</strong>ate the threat they pose to our <strong>child</strong>ren and our communities.”Some of the people <strong>charged</strong> <strong>in</strong> yesterday’s raids are young offenders and others have had their names withheld toprotect the identity of their victims.Those <strong>charged</strong> are all men and many are relatives or neighbours of victims, said police.Police say collections of <strong>child</strong> <strong>porn</strong>ography <strong>in</strong> circulation on the Internet <strong>in</strong>clude hundreds of thousands of images andhundreds of <strong>child</strong> rape videos.The victims are <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>gly younger and the images are more violent as the appetite for live video of <strong>child</strong> sexualabuse on the Internet grows, say police.Often mistaken as victimless, most <strong>child</strong> <strong>porn</strong>ography offences <strong>in</strong> Ontario <strong>in</strong>volve the actual sexual exploitation, rapeand sexual torture of <strong>child</strong>ren, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>fants, on-camera, said police.More charges are pend<strong>in</strong>g.The <strong>in</strong>vestigation cont<strong>in</strong>ues.–with files from TorStar News.
