PAGE 26, The Wayne County News, 2013 Football Preview, AUGUST 28, 2013Tigers are reloaded for another runBY MICHAEL HUPPStaff WriterHUNTINGTON – As the clock ticked thefinal seconds away, Vinson Middle Schoolplayers, fans and coaches left Wayne PioneerField with heavy hearts. The combined team of Vinson and severalCeredo-Kenova Middle School playershad just lost the county championship tothe undefeated Buffalo Bison. The county’sleading rusher Kurtlen Brown had put theteam within 13.2 seconds of taking homethe county crown, but to no avail.Fast forward to this August. Gone isBrown, the team’s quarterback and on-fieldleader Brady Booth, the whole starting lineand the advantage of depth in a beefed-uproster created by a team that folded.Enter the 2013 Vinson Tigers – not arebuilding year, but with 27 players comingout for Coach Ryan Barnhouse’s squad, it ismore of a reloading.“We have kids coming out of the woodwork. We do not have a one-play wonder thisyear, but overall we are better skill-wise thanlast year,” Barnhouse said.Leading the charge for the Tigers isquarterback Derek Johnson. Barnhouse saidJohnson follows in the mold of Tiger quarterbacksbefore him – excellent runner withquick footwork and a solid arm.“He is a legit dual-threat quarterback,”Barnhouse said of his signal caller. “Weworked on his mechanics and fundamentalsthis summer. He has come around and developeda really strong arm.”Barnhouse said missing is a 6”3’ target atthe wideout spot like last year, but instead isa stable of athletic receivers.“Of course it is hard to replace a CaidenConley, but we’ve got some guys that aregoing to see time. Johnson can get them theball, we can create some space and makesome plays,” Barnhouse said. The man with the daunting task of replacingBrown at running back is Daniel Perry.Barnhouse said Perry was on the Vinson ATeam last year, but is about 6-feet, 170 poundsof tough runner. Perry is described as a versatileback with plenty of elusive speed.“He is not going to do what Kurt did lastyear, but he is much more diverse. He is stillcapable of taking one long if he gets aroundthe corner,” Barnhouse said. This year’s big question will be the lineplay. The Tigers lost all five primary starterson both sides of the ball. Fortunately forBarnhouse, there were several good-sizedkids waiting in the wings. This year’s linewill boast two 230-pounders, a pair of 240’sand one 250-pound behemoth. Not too shabbyfor an eighth-grade squad.“”This year we hope to have the advantageof depth. We have several other big kids wecan rotate in there. That is a big plus for us,”the optimistic coach said.Defensively, Barnhouse said the team willrun different schemes with different personnelbut the strength of the defense definitelylies in the linebacking corps. The excitedcoach said he believes his kids are the bestlinebacking group in the county.“They just have tremendous footwork. They swarm to the ball and when I look atthem out there, you do not see any fear,”Barnhouse said. Most importantly for Barnhouse, theteam’s biggest asset is there are no egos onthe team. According to the Tiger coach, theyhave had no attitude, have been excited togo and most importantly, are good studentsin the classroom.“We are solid. We have depth, speed, size.We are not rebuilding or even reloading actually. It is more reshaping a different group.I’m excited – kids are excited. We have smartkids. We (the coaches) have a 45-minute studyhall after practice,” Barnhouse said.“We have them prepped academically aswell as on the field. That is why student isfirst in student athlete.”With a positive attitude, a good head ontheir shoulders and the newest installment ofTigers on the field…bringing another countychampionship to Westmoreland is hopefullywithin Vinson’s reach in 2013.
The Wayne County News, 2013 Football Preview, AUGUST 28, 2013, PAGE 27Wayne Middle - business as usualBy JASON PERRYSports WriterWAYNE – There adage says “if it ain’tbroke, don’t fix it.” This proves true inthe approach to football that the WayneMiddle School Pioneers will likely exhibitthis season. With long-time coach Ted Williamsonstepping down in the off-season, a newcoach at the the helm of the Pioneer shipwith intentions of reclaiming past WayneCounty glory.Justin Brooks was a member of Williamson’scoaching staff and is familiar withthe offense associated with Wayne footballat any level and as the new head coach, heknows what is expected of him.“I helped last year with the team,”Brooks said, “I also was an assistant withthe baseball team, but this is my first headcoaching job.”With the size of his team, it becomesapparent that things will be about maintainingthe status quo as far as power footballis concerned.“We’re going to go and do things theway Wayne has always done,” Brookssaid, “We’re going to go out and do whatwe do best.“We’re going to go out Thursday nightand play what we know. We might throw ina few new things here and there, but it willlargely stay the same.”The size of the Pioneers just might be allthe edge needed this season as the majorityof Wayne County’s teams have lost size dueto players moving onto high school.“I’m not sure what to expect from otherteams since this is my first year,” Brookssaid, “I haven’t seen as many of the playersas some of the other coaches.“But I would say that things will be differentthis season compared to last, becauseof the kids all over the county who havemoved on to high school.“I think things will be a little moreequal.”Wayne will take advantage of any opportunityit can in an effort to make it backto the county championship game. ThePioneers were absent from the title gameafter a long six-year streak when they werein it annually.“Jeremiah Milum will be our quarterbackand Loan McSweeney will likely run theball for us and I feel he is one of the fasterkids in the county,” Brooks said, “JacobCassidy will make some waves at tight endand Mikey Bartram is a big seventh graderwho will probably be in the mix a lot.”With the folding of Buffalo MiddleSchool’s team, a hole is left on the schedulethat Brooks will have to scramble to fill. With county schools being a school, the other match-ups become even moreimportant.“We’re looking forward to our countyschedule,” Brooks said, “Those will all bekey because of us just missing the countychampionship.“We’re focused on winning the countygames.”The lack of a Bison team may change theway county football will be played, bringinga level of uncertainty that wasn’t there beforefor a number of coaches.“We’re still going to prepare and approachthings as business as usual,” Brooks said,“The hardest thing is going to be comingup with a game to fill that space.“It seems for the last few years we’vehad an extra open date because of the wayWayne County football goes. The first year coach isn’t too worriedoutside of finding a last minute game.“We’re going to go out and practice thesame as we always do,” Brooks said, “We’renot going to prepare any differently.“All that has changed is that we’re goingto have to make a few more phone calls toround up a game.”
