PAGE 30, The Wayne County News, 2013 Football Preview, AUGUST 28, 2013Tulsa, ECU chance to exit C-USA with another titleBy STEPHEN HAWKINSAP Sports WriterTulsa and East Carolina get one morechance to win another Conference USA titlebefore moving to a new league.Or maybe a newcomer like LouisianaTech or Middle Tennessee can get startedwith a championship in C-USA, which stillhas plenty of teams coming and going. The Bulldogs and Blue Raiders are amongsix new teams this season in ConferenceUSA, those additions more than offsettingthe four that left. Tulane joins Tulsa and EastCarolina as schools in their final season in theleague — and that trio will be fully replacedover the next two years.“Honestly, it’s exciting to me. I think thathaving the fact that it’s already out there thatthere’s going to be transition when the year’sover, it takes away the concern,” said Tulsacoach Bill Blankenship. “What I’m moreexcited about is getting to play Texas-SanAntonio and Larry Coker, and North Texasand Dan McCarney, and Skip Holtz andLouisiana Tech.”Defending C-USA champion Tulsa losteight starters from the league’s top defensebut is still the West Division favorite. TheGolden Hurricane also won the league’s firstchampionship game in 2005. East Carolina, which has also won two titles in that span, returns eight starters on both offense anddefense and is favored in the East on itsway out.“It’s not that awkward and being pickedalways just makes it a real challenge, butit shows great respect for your program,”Pirates coach Ruffin McNeill said.McNeill is in his fourth season at EastCarolina, where he replaced Skip Holtz, who is back in C-USA in his first season atLouisiana Tech. The Bulldogs didn’t play ina bowl last season even after going 9-3 whileaveraging 51 points and 578 yards per game.Sonny Dykes, another son of a well-knownhead coach, left for California and there arealso 32 seniors gone from that squad. The only way Holtz faces East Carolinais if both teams make it to the league championshipgame. When Tulsa, East Carolina and Tulanehead to the American Athletic Conference, there will be seven former C-USA teamsnext season in the league that used to bethe Big East.FIVE THINGS TO WATCH:1) WELCOME — AND STAY AWHILE:There are four first-year coaches in C-USA,and all are at schools set to still be in theUP AND OVER - In this Nov. 25, 2011 file photo, Tulsa tailback Trey Watts (22) jumpsover Houston defensive lineman Zeke Riser (90) as linebacker Everett Daniels (54)moves in for the tackle in the fourth quarter of an NCAA college football game inTulsa, Okla. Sean Kugler is a UTEPalum and former assistant (1993-2000) whothen coached for three NFL teams beforegetting his first head coaching job as MikePrice’s replacement. Former Oklahoma Stateoffensive coordinator Todd Monken takesover at Southern Miss, which was the onlywinless FBS team last season at 0-12, cominga year after the Golden Eagles were 12-2 andC-USA champs. Southern Miss next seasonwill be the only team remaining from theoriginal 1996 C-USA lineup. Holtz spent thelast three seasons in the Big East with SouthFlorida. Ron Turner is in his first season atFIU after working for three different NFLteams since his stint at Illinois’ head coachfrom 1997-2004.2) LOT OF LONE STAR: Four of theleague’s 14 teams are in Texas — NorthTexas, Rice, UTEP and UTSA. That shouldhelp build some regional rivalries, especiallywith all of them in the West Division. “Youlook back at the Southwest Conference days, all the great rivalries existed because of thelocations of the universities,” Rice coachDavid Bailiff said. And Louisiana Tech, which had been in the WAC, isn’t too faraway. “All of a sudden you’ve got car-ridetrips for your fan base, where people get inthe car and put the flag in the window,” Holtzsaid. “Their fans can also come to our place, which I think is going to be a completelydifferent atmosphere for Louisiana Tech.Because being in the WAC, every trip’s beena plane ride.”3) PASSING HERD: With Rakeem Catothrowing the ball at Marshall, expect morevideo game-like numbers the offense. Catoled the FBS last year with 350 yards passingand 34 completions a game, along witha league-best 37 touchdowns. His career 66percent completion rate is current the bestin school history, ahead of Byron Leftwichor Chad Pennington. And Cato has his topreceiver back in junior Tommy Shuler, whohad a school-record 110 catches last seasonfor 1,138 yards and six touchdowns.4) SUNNY OUTLOOK?: Middle Tennessee, going into its 99th football season, waspart of a three-way tie for second in the SunBelt Conference last season. Florida Atlanticand FIU were both 2-6 in the Sun Belt, andthe only team to finish below them in thatleague was South Alabama, a transitioningFBS team that wasn’t even eligible for theleague title. FIU lost eight starters on bothsides of the ball, but Florida Atlantic has15 starters back (seven on offense, eighton defense).5) NOW FOR THE KICKER(S): Tulanekicker Cairo Santos made all 21 ofhis field goal attempts last season, includinga 57-yarder that matched Rice’s ChrisBoswell for the longest in the conference.Boswell made an FBS-high six kicks of atleast 50 yards last season and has 11 in hiscareer. UAB’s Ty Long was 14 of 17 witha 54-yarder. Half of the league’s teamshave returning kickers who made kicks ofat least 51 yards. The others are UTSA’sSean Ianno, Southern Miss’ Corey Acosta,Florida Atlantic’s Mitch Anderson and EastCarolina’s Warren Harvey.
The Wayne County News, 2013 Football Preview, AUGUST 28, 2013, PAGE 313 QBs vie to replace GenoSmith at West VirginiaBy DOUG WALPAssociated PressMORGANTOWN (AP) — Thethree quarterbacks competing tobecome Geno Smith’s heir at WestVirginia have a combined 10 careertouchdown passes.Lack of production aside, coachDana Holgorsen sees plenty of capabletalent to choose from amongFlorida State transfer Clint Trickett, longtime Smith backup Paul Millardand redshirt freshman FordChildress.Holgorsen, whose offenseshave produced 4,000-yard passersin eight straight seasons, hasindicated he’ll take his time inchoosing a starter for the Aug. 31season opener against William &Mary.Trickett grew up in Morgantownwhile his dad, Rick, was the offensiveline coach at West Virginiafrom 2001-06.He also has the most game experienceof the three quarterbackswith two career starts and 17 totalappearances for the Seminoles. He’s completed 66 of 106 attemptsfor 947 yards, seven touchdownsand four interceptions.Trickett graduated from FloridaState in the spring and has two yearsof eligibility remaining.“He’s good, he’s seasoned. Hedoesn’t get nervous,” Holgorsensaid.Millard has three TDs and threeinterceptions in 34 career passattempts as the two-year backupto Smith, a three-year starter whoowns nearly every passing recordfor the Mountaineers.“We’re all fighting to be thestarting quarterback for the Mountaineers,”Millard said. “We allhave that same goal in mind,so it’s going to be competitivethroughout. We just have to go inday in and day out and keep onthe grind.”Millard and Childress battledthrough the spring with neitherwinning the job outright. Trickett’stransfer was announced less thantwo weeks after West Virginia’sspring game. The decision to transfer andplay for West Virginia was a dreamTrickett had for a long time.“I wanted to come here out ofhigh school,” Trickett said. “Itdidn’t really work out, didn’t reallyget recruited. It was a differentoffense then. So I went to FloridaState and then Geno left. It’s a nobrainer. I’m from here. I’m a WestVirginia kid.”West Virginia didn’t promise thestarting job outright to him, whichonly fueled his interest.“During the second recruitingprocess, some other schools werepretty quick to say ‘it’s yours ifyou want it.’ And I didn’t reallylike that,” Trickett said. “Becauseit’s college football. You’re goingto have to compete wherever yougo and I didn’t really trust whatthe other coaches were saying. Ijust trusted what Dana said. Hewas like ‘hey, I’m not promisingyou anything, but you’re going toget chances’, so that’s all I couldask for.”With only a few full-pad practicesso far, Holgorsen said thereweren’t many observations to makeother than assessing each player’scommunication abilities and howthey appeared to manage themselvesout on the practice field.“We’re just evaluating themrunning plays,” Holgorsen said.“Do they know how to communicate?Do they know what to do?And then when you put them inlive settings that’s when you makedecisions.”Holgorsen said all three quarterbackshave dealt with any earlypressure well.“You can tell he’s (Trickett) gotsome game experience. Just by thecalmness that he possesses,” Holgorsensaid. “I think Clint can getin the mix to be the guy, because hehas that in his personality. Ford andPaul possess that calmness rightnow, too. They understand what’sgoing on around them.”The advantage for Millard ishis familiarity with Holgorsen’soffense. He’s the only one of thethree who’s taken snaps in a gamefor the Mountaineers.“At the end of the day, we areall teammates and somebody isgoing to step up to lead this team,”Millard said. “For me personally, Iam just going out there every dayand trying to get better. Obviouslywe all have the same goal in mind,to be the starting quarterback ofthis team.”Childress is the underdog in thequarterback race due to his lack ofexperience but he possesses a strongerarm than his counterparts.“We are all just trying to getbetter and are pushing each other,”Childress said. “I feel a ton betterwith the offense. I actually knowwhat is going on, what the defenseis doing and what I need to call andcheck out of everything.”FILE - This Sept. 17, 2011 filephoto, Florida State quarterbackClint Trickett (9) throws apass during the fourth quarterof a NCAA college footballgame against Oklahoma inTallahassee, Fla.
