PAGE 4, The Wayne County News, 2013 Football Preview, AUGUST 28, 2013Spring ValleyTimberwolvesBig line, bigger expectationsBY MICHAEL HUPPStaff WriterHUNTINGTON – The Spring ValleyTimberwolves are big – really big.The only thing bigger filling the WolvesDen are the expectations surrounding sixthyearcoach Brad Dingess’ squad.Despite losing Huff Award winner and1,000-yard rusher Elijah Wellman – alongwith fellow 1,000-yard rusher Ryan George– the Wolves return most of the startersfrom 2012.After finishing No. 10 in AAA last season, compiling an 8-4 record and winning the firstplayoff game in the school’s history – fans, coaches and players alike, are ready to makethe trip to Wheeling Island.“You go into the season and you wantto win every game, of course. You want tobeat your rivals. You want to win a conferencechampionship. Ultimately you want towin a state championship. I think you takeaway a fumble and a missed extra-pointand we would have got there last year,”Dingess said. This year’s key to a championship run isto remain healthy, according to Dingess. Hehopes his team peaks at the right time, likelast season, so it is a solid squad going intothe playoffs. And most importantly, get thosefirst crucial wins. Last season, the Wolveshad probably one of the toughest openingschedules in the state.Spring Valley opened with eventual staterunner-up Cabell Midland and Huntington. Both teams are I-64 rivals and both gamesresulted in heartbreaking losses. Dingesssaid he thought his squad was playing witha “hangover” from the loss to CM when TheValley played Huntington the next week.“We have got to win that first one. Starting0-2 last year almost killed us. We felt like wehad to play the rest of the season with ourbacks against the wall and we do not want tostart this season like that,” Dingess said. “Wecan not afford to lose those games. Of coursewinning rivalry games is important, but thefirst is definitely the biggest for us.”Dingess said he and everyone else knowthe hole left in the backfield from WellmanSee T’WOLVES on Next Page

Many of the returning skillplayers have big game experience. The most experienced and the most talkedabout aspect of this year’s installment of theTimberwolves is the line.Spring Valley returns junior Division 1prospects Trevor Stacy and Alex Locklearat the tackle positions. Locklear is a 6”5’,310-pound behemoth at the left tackle spot.Stacy covers the blindside at a slimmed down6”5’, 290 lbs. Stacy lost 20 pounds duringthe offseason. Both big men on campus haveimproved their footwork the past severalmonths and will anchor an offensive line thatexpects to make big gains every play.“Both of them did the camp circuit thissummer. The letters and calls keep comingin. They are definitely college capable players. But you will not meet a more humblepair of kids. They just want to win games,”Dingess said. And the great part about the “dynamicduo,” according to Dingess, is they are brightstudents. Stacy scored a 29 and Locklear a23 on their ACTS – as sophomores takingthe exam for the first time.“We have schools like Duke, Nebraska,WVU, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Wake Forrest,Marshall, Tennessee calling. To have oneplayer of that caliber is great, but two of themis something special,” Dingess said. The Wolves return junior starter RickyWillis at the guard spot. Several others, including junior Grayson Tanner (SpringValley line great and former MarshallUniversity player Jarred Baisden’s firstcousin), senior Josh Hammer, junior KodyRiggs and sophomore Skylar Ratcliff are allfighting to fill out the starter roles at center2012 RESULTS:Cabell Midland, L 21-13Huntington, L 17-0S. Every play we have to get better. We have a few holes to fill at the center andguard spots from last year, but we are solid,”Dingess said. The most seasoned skill veteran is juniorsignal-caller Tyler Brown. Brown took thestarting job as a sophomore last year aftertransferring from Tennessee. He startedall 12 games for Dingess and will take thehelm again.According to Dingess, Brown grew twoinches and has put on 20 lbs of muscle inthe off-season. Brown is expected to takethe leadership role for the team.“Tyler is not the same kid from last season. He completely understands what weare trying to do on the field and has a fullunderstanding of the offense as well. Heplayed some big games for us last year. Heis excited to get out there,” Dingess said.Brown has a strong arm and has lookedsolid throwing tight spinning passes to receiversduring the 7-on-7 summer circuit – afactor Dingess said may lead to the Wolvesgoing to the air more. But despite the possibilityof the air-game opening up, Dingesssaid teams should be reminded that the bestrunning back on the field is under center.“He has deceiving speed and he is notafraid to lower the pads and lay it to you. Heis not scared. Tyler is definitely going to befun to watch this year,” Dingess said.Taking the handoff from Brown is a listof backs hungry to have their number called. The most experienced back and with theedge going into the season is junior TylerRobertson. Robertson was the third backoption on many plays last season for SpringValley.Senior Colby Webb has given him a runfor his money though, making a name forhimself during the summer practice session.Webb also had a big scrimmage two weeksago against Russell. Webb broke a 60-yardtouchdown run and then took a Brown pass40-yards after catching the pass throughtwo defenders.Others who will get the ball in the carryby-committeesystem will be Jakob Frye,Chase Lucas and Dylan Lageman.
