Interim Management ReportFinancial CommentarycontinuedIn summary, the EEV result provides a measure of the future shareholder value added from the new business ina particular year, whilst the cash result provides a measure of the underlying cash that has been generated forshareholders in the year (a factor in determining the dividend). We believe it is these two measures that betterrepresent shareholder value.Sections 1-3 below provide a commentary on the performance of the business on these bases, whilst Section 4covers other matters of interest to shareholders.SECTION 1: INTERNATIONAL FINANCIAL REPORTING STANDARDS (IFRS)IFRS ResultThe IFRS result is shown on pages 42 to 58.Total profit before shareholder tax for the six months was £55.3 million, up 52% on the result for the sameperiod in the prior year of £36.3 million. The key driver of the improved result was higher income from funds under management, with the averagefunds under management in the six month period being £28 billion, some 27% higher than the prior period. The IFRS result requires the pre-tax profit of the life business to be ‘grossed up’ for policyholder tax, with thecorresponding amount then being deducted within the tax charge. The table below reflects the IFRS resultafter eliminating this ‘gross up’ in order to show the shareholder return from the business. The Board viewsthis figure as the best measure of the performance for the period based on the IFRS result.SixMonthsEnded30 June2011SixMonthsEnded30 June2010TwelveMonthsEnded31 December2010£ million £ million £ millionLife business 49.1 27.5 72.8Unit Trust business 14.4 8.4 17.3Distribution business – 5.9 5.8Other (8.2) (5.5) (11.7)Profit before shareholder tax 55.3 36.3 84.2Policyholder tax 3.8 (8.1) 77.7Total pre-tax profits 59.1 28.2 161.9Policyholder tax (3.8) 8.1 (77.7)Shareholder tax (7.7) (7.9) (29.2)Profit after tax 47.6 28.4 55.0Life BusinessThe life business profit for the six months to 30 June 2011 at £49.1 million (2010: £27.5 million) was higherthan the same period last year.08St.
