CEO’s MessageCouncil has been busy in <strong>2011</strong>-12, continuing to provide highquality services to our community while also launching severalexciting new projects.AdvocacyWe have taken a strong stanceon two issues: reducing the harmcaused by problem gambling andpreventing family violence. We havebeen leading a campaign for theState Government to change thelaws to reduce the high concentration<strong>of</strong> electronic gaming machines invulnerable communities. We havealso taken a proactive approach topreventing violence against women,and will soon begin a $1 million threeyearpartnership project to reduce theincidence <strong>of</strong> violence against womenand children.Capital worksOver the past 12 months, we haveinvested $35.4 million in expandingand improving local communityinfrastructure. Local residents andbusinesses will benefit from theadditional 351 car parks providedas part <strong>of</strong> the $17.3 millionenvironmentally-friendly building inEuneva Avenue, Glen Waverley andfrom a beautification <strong>of</strong> Oakleigh’spopular Eaton Mall.Sustainability focusCouncil allocated an additional$200,000 from its <strong>2011</strong>-12 Budgetto implement actions from itsEnvironmentally Sustainable RoadMap. The four-year plan sets outactions to meet measurable targetsfor energy, water, waste and food,natural environment, transport, andplanning and design. We are makinggood progress, with the installation<strong>of</strong> energy efficient lighting at fivecommunity centres reducinggreenhouse gas emissions 14%.Celebrating diversityWe are so pleased that <strong>Monash</strong>remains one <strong>of</strong> the most vibrant andculturally diverse municipalities inVictoria. Data from the <strong>2011</strong> Censusrevealed that nearly half (45%)<strong>of</strong> <strong>Monash</strong>’s residents were bornoverseas. We will keep reviewingour services and programs toensure they meet the specific needs<strong>of</strong> our community.Finally, I would like to thank theCouncillors and staff <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Monash</strong> for welcoming me back tothe organisation as Chief Executive.I would like to thank former CEODavid Conran for his excellentstewardship <strong>of</strong> the Council over theprevious 17 years.Dr Andi Diamond<strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>Summary</strong> <strong>2011</strong>-<strong>2012</strong> 5
