Selecting safety cables and electrical wiring Selecting safety cables Safety cables are an integral part of the towing system. They are a secondary safety device, required by law in many states. Our aircraft-type, galvanized steel safety cables are continuously tested to ROADMASTER’s relentless standards. • Match the vehicle’s weight to the safety cable. • 6,000-pound capacity cables are available in either straight or coiled styles • 8,000-pound capacity cables are available in straight style • 12-inch safety cable extensions • Required for use with hitch extensions, high-low receivers, or any accessory which extends the length of the towing system • EZ Hook safety cables • Quicker and easier to connect and disconnect • 6,000-pound capacity • Come standard with the Sterling All-Terrain tow bar Towing and Suspension Solutions straight safety cable coiled safety cable Selecting the electrical wiring components By law, it is necessary to have a lighting system in the towed vehicle that will allow the towed vehicle’s brake lights, turn signals and running lights to mimic the motorhome’s. There are three ways to accomplish that: • Universal Wiring Kit — the most popular method. Connects the towed vehicle’s lights to the motorhome’s with a system of diodes. • Taillight Wiring Kit — a self-contained system, with no splicing into existing wiring. Bypasses the towed vehicle’s lighting system with a set of independent plugs and sockets mounted inside each lens housing. (The towed vehicle’s lens housing must have room for an extra socket and bulb.) • Magnetic Tow Lights — a self-contained system, with no splicing into existing wiring. Fits all vehicles. In addition to one of the three wiring methods above, an electrical cord is required, to connect the two vehicles’ lighting systems. • Flexo-Coil or straight? • Flexo-Coil electrical cords are used with tow bars without a channel guide (Falcon 2, StowMaster, Tracker). • Straight electrical cords are used with tow bars with a channel guide (All-Terrain tow bars). • An electrical socket bracket is used to mount the socket to the front of the towed vehicle. One of the first determinations is the type of wiring. There are three: • 4-wire — a four-wire component fits towed vehicles with combined brake and turn signals — that is, the brake light also does the flashing for the turn signal. • 6-wire — a 6-wire component fits towed vehicles with separate brake and turn signals (there are amber or red turn signal lights, which are separate from the brake lights. • 7-wire — a 7-wire component is primarily designed for towing a trailer. However, many newer motorhomes have 7-wire electrical systems. 7
A ‘direct’ system? BrakeMaster is recommended if your customers don’t frequently change motorhomes or towed vehicles. Because it connects directly to the motorhome’s braking system, the initial installation is longer than a portable system. But once installed, it’s a truly trouble-free and easy-to-use braking system. A ‘progressive’ system? — InvisiBrake is recommended if your customers like convenience above all else and plan on keeping their towed vehicles for the foreseeable future. InvisiBrake is not a portable system, but the major components can be easily removed and installed in a new towed vehicle. Initial installation time is approximately three hours. Or a portable? — Even Brake and the 9700 are recommended if your customers change towed vehicles or motorhomes often. Both are portable systems, with no installed components in the motorhome except for a dashboard monitor. Initial installation time is approximately one hour, depending on the vehicles.
