Frequently Asked
Questions
What is the 9700?
It’s a portable supplemental braking system that applies
a pre-set pressure to the towed vehicle’s brake
pedal each time the motorhome’s brake lights are illuminated
— simply push a button to select light, medium
or heavy braking.
Or, just as easily, the 9700 can be set to activate only
in an emergency break away.
How does the 9700 work?
The 9700 uses the electrical connections already in
place on your towed vehicle (the towed vehicle’s electrical
harness) to brake when you brake the motorhome
— the same electrical signal that activates the
towed vehicle’s brake lights also activates the 9700.
Is the 9700 a ‘proportional’ braking system?
No. Unlike BrakeMaster and Even Brake, the 9700
always applies the same braking pressure — either
light, medium or heavy — which you select by pushing
a button. (Regardless of which pressure you select, the
9700 will always apply maximum braking pressure in
an emergency ‘break away.’)
Will it brake when I don’t want it to?
No. The 9700 will only brake when the motorhome
brakes are applied — it works in tandem with you.
Can I switch it between vehicles?
Yes. The 9700 is completely portable, and after the
initial installation, it only takes a minute or two to
transfer it to another vehicle.
The brake pedal clamp is easy to attach and remove,
and the 9700 plugs into the towed vehicle’s 12-volt
outlet for its power.
Will my battery go dead?
The 9700 draws power from the towed vehicle’s battery,
and if the battery is not charged after towing (by
driving the vehicle, running the engine, or with a battery
charger) the 9700 will eventually drain it completely.
Typically, this will take several days of towing,
depending on the age and condition of the battery. We
recommend charging the towed vehicle’s battery at the
end of every day, once you’ve reached your destination.
Does it fit in my car?
The 9700 fits in virtually all vehicles.
How long does it take to install?
Installation, along with a brief overview given by your
dealer, typically takes an hour. After the initial installation,
it only takes a minute or two to connect or disconnect.
How do I know it’s working?
An LED monitor in the motorhome will illuminate each
time the 9700 is activated.
What if I think it’s braking
too hard, or not hard enough?
You can adjust the braking pressure from “heavy” to
“light” or “medium,” or conversely, from “light” to “medium”
or “heavy.”
Or, if you prefer to use the 9700 as an emergency
device only, you can set it to activate only in a break
away.
I have an anti-lock braking system
on my car. Will the 9700 interfere with it?
No. Anti-lock braking only works when the car’s power
is on. Since the power will be turned off when you
tow your vehicle, the 9700 will not interfere with your
anti-lock braking system.
Why is the 9700 a better pre-set system?
The 9700 is an economical alternative to systems with
proportional braking, such as Even Brake and Brake-
Master.
Within its category, the 9700 is unique in features
such as extended braking protection, automatically applying
maximum brake pressure in a break away, and
its ‘break away only’ mode.
It’s completely portable — you can set it up in a matter
of minutes, and with a second vehicle kit, you can
transfer it from vehicle to vehicle just as fast.
It’s designed better — its feet are set wide apart, to
form a stable, solid platform, and its air cylinder is angled
to the floor, for the same reason. The 9700 has
adjustable feet and an adjustable pedal clamp, for a
quick, secure and stable fit. A high-performance air
compressor takes less time to charge — the 9700 is
ready for the next stop nearly twice as fast as the leading
competitor.
It’s made by ROADMASTER, the acknowledged leader
in RV towing products. More people put their trust
in ROADMASTER towing systems than in any other
brand.
