Catching Up With Carolby Carol SilvaA Long Island Love StoryThis is a Long Island love story. Actually it’s a couple ofLong Island love stories.Chapter One starts after World War II. Rita Santaniellolived in a strong Italian Catholic home in Mineola andwas working as a receptionist in New York City.It was hard work. Rita was already in the bed the nighther girlfriend Gloria called and asked her to go a dance atthe United Nations headquarters in LakeSuccess. Gloria was a good saleswoman. Before she knew it, Rita was up and dressed in her new angorasweater. The dance was life changing. Rita saw Drake McGuffeyfor the first time. Drake worked on the radio news desk of theU.N. But what really got Rita was Drake’s nose. It was the noseshe wanted her children to have. Drake swept beautiful youngRita onto the dance floor and off her feet.Chapter Two takes place decades later. Rita and Drake McGuffeywere proudly raising their five children in a spirit packed Carle Place Cape. Danny20, Robbie 19, Jamie 18, Tina 17 and Mary 12. I met Robbie at New York Instituteof Technology. He was one of the most positive people I’d ever met. He invited mehome to a prayer meeting. And there she was – the power behind it all. This feisty little brunette Mom fit in with everyone: us college kids, the “grownups”and especially with Drake. Rita and Drake were giving their children the bestNow at 83, RitaSantinello McGuffeyis a publishedauthor!gift they could: a great marriage. Rita was never shy about sharing her faith. “Rememberwhat St. Thomas Aquinas said, ‘Work like everything depends on you, butpray like everything depends on God.’” My Mom passed away when my babieswere 1 and 2, so “Nana Rita” got the new Mom calls, from diaper rash to tantrums.Sadly Drake died a year ago, two months before their 60th anniversary. Itseemed Rita had lost her right arm, but not her faith. So, Chapter Three. Ritaprayed harder. And at 82 she got serious about the book she’d played withon her laptop. It started as a record of the family history - howthe Santaniellos came from Italy to Port Washington in theearly 1900s. But Cross Over turned into a novel, about thelove and challenges of the three generations since. Now at 83, Rita Santinello McGuffey is a published author!Mystery writer Mary Higgens Clark’s endorsement is on hercover, “Rita Santaniello McGuffey is a gifted writer and I’m sureCross Over will be a splendid read.” Rita’s even got a websitewww.ritamybook.com. And Rita is on a book tour, doing booksignings around her new home up in Orange County, in New Jersey (whereJamie has become Father James) and even on Long Island.Chapter 4: Rita gives new life at 83. Marotta, MDPatients all want the same thing - to look and feel better about themselveswith as little “down-time” as possible, at the lowest cost, andwith the least discomfort. In the past, facial surgery, while always recognizedas the most effective means of looking younger, was typicallyassociated with prolonged recovery, discomfort and a high cost. This isno longer the case. Facial surgery has evolved to meet the demands oftoday’s busy and discriminating patient. In my practice, I offer a numberof minimally invasive options that provide amazing results with shorterprocedure times, quicker recovery, little to no discomfort and at lower cost than traditionalfacial surgery. I call these procedures the EZ-Liftand EZ-Lift Eyes andEZ-Microfat transfer.Facial aging is a complex transformation involving areas including thebrow, upper eyelids, lower eyelids, cheeks, jawline, and neck. The amountof aging people have in these areas varies greatly based on anatomy, genetics, and facial/neck fat. If the brow and cheeks/lower eyelids havedrooped or deflated, the EZ-Microfat transfer can help restore a youthfulfullness to the face. EZ-Lift Eyes corrects sagging skin and bags in theupper and lower eyelids. The EZ-Lift, like a traditional facelift, diminishesjowls, folds, and the dreaded “turkey gobbler” in the neck. These E-Z Lift procedures can bedone alone or in combination to address most of the problems in facial aging. In general, EZ-Lift procedures have a quicker recovery time because the areas of surgery aresmaller and shorter incisions are utilized. Also, time in surgery tends to be much quicker thanmore extensive lifts. These adaptations translate into less bruising and swelling, less postoperativediscomfort, and shorter “down-time” away from work or recreation. Because EZ-Liftprocedures utilize some of the same plastic surgery techniques adapted from “full” lifts, theyhave significant longevity and offer long lasting improvement in appearance.Good AdviceEZ-Lift procedures havea quicker recovery time…[and]… are performed underlocal anesthesia.advertisementEZ Lift procedures are attractive to many patients because they are performed under localanesthesia in the office while the patient’s awake. Despite the fact that today’s anesthetics arevery safe, some patients are still afraid of “going to sleep.” With E-Z Lift procedures, localanesthesia (numbing agent) is delivered via simple injection using fine needles to the entiresurgical area so no pain is felt – it’s similar to what you’ve received at your dentist’s office. Inaddition, light oral sedation may be given to relax the nervous patient. Patients find the experienceextremely tolerable including those who claim they are “afraid of needles.”Since there are a lot of other procedures and practitioners out there who offer some versionof “mini” facelift surgery, all with varying names, here’s some good advice to help you withyour decision if you’re considering a mini-lift.1. Pick the surgeon, not the procedure: A surgery is only as good as thetalent and expertise of the surgeon who is performing it. Have a consultationwith a surgeon who can correctly diagnose and treat the problem thatis bothering you. Look at the surgeon’s results and credentials – chooseonly a board certified surgeon. A facial plastic surgeon is someone who isdual board certified and specializes in plastic surgery of the face. Talk toother patients who have had surgery with the surgeon performing yoursurgery.2. Don’t believe the hype: Be wary of infomercials, “factories” and overly commercialofferings that promise miracle results and no recovery. Any mini-lift is surgery, after all,and even non-surgical procedures have some form of recovery.3. Be realistic: Not everyone is a candidate for smaller or mini lifts. The reason more extensivefacelifts exist under anesthesia is because they offer the ability to do more. You maynot get the results you were looking for with a smaller procedure if you have excessivedrooping. To see E-Z Lift Before and After Photos, visit www.MarottaMD.com or call 631-982-2022To advertise: 516-505-0555 x1 or ads@liwomanonline.com LONG ISLAND WOMANApril 2012 23
