State using a 7-0 run to take a 54-49 lead with 5:58 remaining, Florida’s VickyMcIntyre hit an 8-foot baseline jumper to halt the spurt and spark a 5-1 march for the Gators, whoclosed to within 55-54 with 4:30 on the clock. The Wolfpack came right back with an offensive rebound putback by Kody Burke, but theGators rallied as Jaterra Bonds converted two free throws, Sydney Moss banked in a six-footpull-up jumper on a fast break and Jennifer George hit one free throw and Florida took a 59-57advantage with 2:37 remaining. As the entire game flowed, both teams answered each other’s run with one of their own andN.C. State came right back with one free throw followed by a three-pointer from Marissa Kastanekand the Pack regained the lead, 61-59, with 1:43 to play. UF called a timeout to settle and Needlescame out of the 30-second break nailing her second of three 3-pointers and swung the lead back tothe Gators, 61-62, with 59 seconds remaining.N.C. State then called a timeout and Florida seemed to play solid defense, as Burke missedan outside jumper that was tipped, but the Gators couldn’t find the flailing ball in the air, as it landedright into Markeisha Gatling’s waiting arms under the basket and she put in the short uncontestedjumper that gave the Pack the lead with 42 seconds left.Florida missed its shot on its next offensive possession and N.C. State collected therebounded and the Gators were forced to foul Kastanek because the shot clock was off with 21seconds. Kastanek made the first but missed the second and the Pack held a 64-62 lead. That set up Needles’ three-point heroics, as she calmly nailed it from the left corner whilestanding directly in front of the Gator bench, as Florida took the 65-64 lead. After the Pack called a timeout, they turned the ball over dribbling up the court and wereforced to foul Moss, who sank one of two with 0.9 seconds remaining for the final score.Moss led Florida with a career-high 15 points and collected 10 rebounds to post the firstdouble-double of her young career, while collecting four steals. State’s favor. The Gator rookie checked in and collected a quick offensive rebound and kept the possessionalive as fellow freshman Christin Mercer powered up an inside bucket after a great dish from Bondand tied the game. Miller then ran the floor after a Wolfpack miss and Bonds rewarded her with thepass that she converted into a layup that gave the Gators the two-point lead. The first half was just as exciting. Florida led the majority of the frame and held a 22-14lead with 8:43 to play before N.C. The teamstraded baskets for the next couple of minutes and the game was tied with 1:38 left in the period. With 54 seconds remaining in the first half, N.C. The Gatorsalso held a 10-0 margin in fastbreak points.“I thought this was a really solid team win,” UF head coach Amanda Butler said. “There arecertainly areas where we have to improve. I thought we could have done a better job of defendingthe drive, but all and all we beat a very good team that poses some unique challenges to us, especiallyon defense. We had some spurts when we looked great and other spots that we have to fix.But again, that’s why you play such a challenging schedule this early in the season so you can findout what you do well and what you can’t do well yet so you still have practices to fix it.”Freshman Carlie Needles scored a team-best 14 points, on 5-of-8 shooting that included a3-of-6 effort from the three-point arc, while freshman January Miller scored a career-high 12 points, hitting 6-of-8 form the floor and collecting four offensive rebounds.Senior Naismith Player of the Year Candidate Jennifer George scored 12 points with fiverebounds despite foul trouble for the entire game. Sophomore Kayla Lewis was close to a doubledoublewith 11 points and a team-leading eight rebounds and junior Jaterra Bonds added 10 pointson 4-of-5 shooting, while dishing five assists. For the fourth time this season, freshman Sydney Moss flirted with a triple-double, as sherecorded eight points, seven assists and six rebounds along with four steals.UNI scored the first points of the game, but Florida answered with a 9-2 run and held anearly 9-4 lead, as Lily Svete hit a three-pointer to begin the Gator scoring, followed by JaterraBond’s layup after a steal and outlet from Sydney Moss and a pair of inside jumpers from JenniferGeorge, who picked up two fouls during the opening 5:32 and went to the bench for the majority ofthe half. The Panthers regrouped after the media timeout with George on the bench and scored thenext seven points to take an 11-9 lead that forced Florida to call a timeout to settle, which it did byripping off a 6-0 run to take a 21-14 advantage.Jacqui Kalin halted the run with a three-pointer, but Lewis hit one free throw and Bondsconverted a jumper and Florida regained a seven-point advantage.UNI hit two free throws before Christin Mercer canned two for the Gators and Moss collecteda steal after a great defensive stand and went the length of the court for the layup.UNI regrouped with the next four points and was within five, 28-23, with 2:15 to play in thefirst half, but that’s the closest it would get for the remaining of the game, as Miller putback anoffensive rebound for her first points of the game, as she started a 10-0 run, with the final eight ofthose points closing out the first half where the Gators held a 36-23 lead. The teams traded basks for the next few minutes of the second half, before the Gatorsstaged an 8-1 run over the next three minutes and assumed a 5-31 lead with 14:17 remaining.Lewis scored four points, Bonds two and Vicky McIntyre a field goal, as all nine Gators whodressed for the game scored.Florida never looked back the rest of the contest and maintained a double-figure lead, increasing their margin by as many as 20 points on three different occasions.
