O’Connell CenterKayla Lewis scored a career-high 18 points and guided <strong>Florida</strong> to an 81-75 victory over CentralMichigan in the championship game of the Gator Holiday Classic on Friday night in the StephenC. O’Connell Center. Freshman Sydney Moss was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Playerafter helping <strong>Florida</strong> withstand an intense late rally by the Chippewas, who whittled the Gator’s17-point lead with 5:50 remaining down to six with 2:06 on the clock.With <strong>Florida</strong> (10-3) clinging to a 76-70 lead, senior Jennifer George, who was named to theAll-Tournament Team, converted a tough inside bucket. CMU missed on its next possession, butthe Gators turned the ball over and that same sequence happened on the next trip down the court,as the Gators <strong>com</strong>mitted three turnovers in a 54-second span with Jalisa Olive finally able to makeUF pay as she converted layup and had CMU within six points, 78-72, with 27 seconds remaining.The Chippewas (5-5) then fouled Carlie Needles, who converted 3-of-4 free throws overthe next <strong>13</strong> seconds and gave <strong>Florida</strong> an 81-72 lead with 10 seconds left. CMU’s Jessica Greenknocked down a three-pointer with four seconds remaining to cap the game’s scoring, as <strong>Florida</strong>captured its third consecutive Gator Holiday Classic title, as well as its 18th in the 21 times theevent has crowned a team champion.Lewis collected a double-double for the second time this season and in her career, pullingdown 10 boards to go along with her 18 points, shooting 8-of-<strong>13</strong> from the floor. Moss scored 16points in the title game after netting a game-high 17 points on <strong>Thu</strong>rsday.Coming out of the half, Lewis collected back-to-back buckets with a layup <strong>com</strong>ing off an inboundplay, and a corner jumper to extend the Gator lead, 40-28. CMU’s Jessica Green and CrystalBradford <strong>com</strong>bined for six points at the 15:06 mark to cut the Gator lead to nine. Needles answeredwith a jumper in the lane, but Central Michigan was able to enhance their pressure in the backcourton the Gators and force turnovers.Jessica Schroll, who finished with 15 points on the night and a spot on the All-TournamentTeam, laid in a shot to cut the <strong>Florida</strong> lead to seven, 46-39. With an intense period of scrappy play,Bradford, who tallied 10 points for Central Michigan, nailed a three to draw the Chippewas withinstriking distance of the Gators.After the Gators found their way to the free throw line for the first time in the game at the<strong>13</strong>:14 mark, CMU’s Taylor Johnson, who ended the night with 11 points, converted on a layup to cutthe lead to the smallest it had been all evening, 49-46. UF fired back with an eight-point run thanksto two lay-ins by George, another trey from redshirt junior Lily Svete and a free throw from Moss.Junior Jaterra Bonds was having a solid game until she was whistled for two offensive foulsand earned a technical foul in a three-second span, and with 7:59 remaining fouled out of the gamefor the first time in her collegiate career. Bonds went to the bench with 15 points on 7-of-8 shootingwith eight assists and five rebounds.The momentum easily could have shifted in Central Michigan’s favor with <strong>Florida</strong>’s floorgeneral unable to return to action. The Chippewas, however, were only able to convert on 1-of-3free throws on the Bonds’ foul calls and <strong>Florida</strong> held a 59-51 lead.That’s when Moss stepped up her game, scoring seven points in a 2:09 span.Needles came up with a steal and Moss launched a desperation three-pointer which foundthe bottom of the net as the shot clock expired. Moss then drove and finished in the lane and Lewisconnected on another inbounds play to put the <strong>Florida</strong> lead at 68-53 with 6:14 remaining.Free throws also came into play in the closing 6:18 of the contest and <strong>Florida</strong> stepped upand converted 9-of-12, with makes from Moss, George, Needles and <strong>Jan</strong>uary Miller.The Chippewas managed to give the Gators a scare in the final three minutes as they wenton a 12-6 run, getting a pair of layups and three-pointers from Green, who finished with 12 points.<strong>Florida</strong> shot a season-best 55.4 percent (31-56) from the floor during the game, includinga 6-of-15 effort from the three-point arc and <strong>13</strong>-of-19 showing from the free throw line. O’Connell CenterJennifer George notched her fifth double-double of the year, freshman Sydney Moss flirtedwith a double-double and the <strong>Florida</strong> women’s basketball team capped its non-conference slatewith an 81-50 victory over Holy Cross on Friday evening in the O’Connell Center.The win was the sixth straight for the Gators (11-3), who earned their 14th consecutivehome victory, as well as their 15th straight at home against non-conference opponents.It was a tight game for the first <strong>13</strong> minutes when the Crusaders (5-6) cut <strong>Florida</strong>’s lead totwo points with seven minutes left in the first half.That’s when the Gators outscored Holy Cross 38-<strong>13</strong> over the next 18 minutes and took a<strong>com</strong>manding 64-37 lead with 9:06 remaining in the game.All nine Gators who dressed out for the game scored during that game-changing stretchpaced by George, who scored <strong>13</strong> of her game-high 21 points during the span, including <strong>Florida</strong>’sfirst six points of the second half when the Gators outscored Holy Cross, 44-23, hit 51.4 percent oftheir shots and outrebounded their guests by 18.George also collected 10 rebounds, six on the offensive end, and four steals, as she postedher fifth double-double of the year and the <strong>24</strong>th of her career.Part of <strong>Florida</strong>’s big run came in the final seven minutes of the first half, when the Gatorsended the frame on a 17-9 stretch and took a 37-27 lead into the locker room. Holy Cross held a23-15 rebounding advantage during the first 20 minutes and limited <strong>Florida</strong> to 38.2 percent shooting.Holy Cross scored the first bucket of the second half and dropped UF’s lead to single digits,but George scored the next six points and Carlie Needles drilled a three-pointer for a 17-point Gatorlead. The Crusaders answered with a trey, but Moss canned a 12-footer and Kayla Lewis followedwith a 15-foot jumper and <strong>Florida</strong> never looked back, as the Gators regrouped to outrebound HolyCross by 18 during the second half.Moss, who scored eight during <strong>Florida</strong>’s big run, finished with 17 points – one shy of herseason-high – along with eight rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots.Junior Jaterra Bonds added 10 points and three assists to <strong>Florida</strong>’s winning effort.Alex Smith scored 14 points to lead Holy Cross, which <strong>com</strong>mitted 26 turnovers that led to 33<strong>Florida</strong> points.The teams alternated with mini runs to begin the game, as the Gators scored the first sixpoints that included four from George, before Holy Cross regrouped with the next eight pointsthanks to a pair of three-pointers.Freshman <strong>Jan</strong>uary Miller ended that run with a steal and a layup to swing the scoring backin <strong>Florida</strong>’s favor, as Moss hit a fall-away 10-footer and Vicky McIntyre put back her own miss andgave the Gators a 12-8 lead with <strong>13</strong>:16 on the clock.The teams then traded scores for the next two-plus minutes before Christin Mercer sankone free throw and then came up with a steal and dished to Needles, who nailed a three-pointer inher 12th different game of the year and the Gators held a <strong>24</strong>-18 advantage with 9:36 to play in thefirst half. Again, the Crusaders answered with four consecutive points as part of a 6-2 spurt to closethe gap to two points, 26-<strong>24</strong>, with seven minutes remaining.That’s when <strong>Florida</strong> went on an 8-0 march over the next 2:03 and took a 34-<strong>24</strong> lead. Georgescored the first three points of that run from the free throw line, before Lily Svete knocked down athree-pointers and Moss followed with another steal and layin.Holy Cross scored the next three points from the free throw line and was within seven,before Moss hit one free throw and Bonds worked the final possession to perfection, hitting a toughshort jumper in the paint with five seconds remaining and giving the Gators a 37-27 halftime lead.George scored 10 points during the first half, when the Gators forced 17 turnovers that theyconverted into 18 points. All nine Gators who dressed for the game scored during the first half,marking the seventh time this year every player who suited up contributed offensively.
