That is why some persons choose not to be confined by anenvironment that mandates political correctness and elect to become pastors, or counselors in private practice, or engagedadults in the life of a student so they are free to share life-altering truths with questioning teens who are often notcompetent to make decisions of such an enormous magnitutde (ie., sexual orientation)."Everybody's doing it" and "if it feels good do it" are often the decision making framework whereby some teens makedecsions. Educators, counselors, older family members, etc. can help a student who is trying to "find himself / herself" ifthey have a willing heart to hear. - DavidReply ForwardSubject: Re:Robertson - Professional school counseling & adolelescentsexual identityAuthor: David RobertsonTopic: Discussion Forum Five (October 17 - 30)Date: October 24, 2011 10:16 AMHey Trish - You are so right. Everyone has a right to have an opinion even if their opinion is wrong. Many people make lifealterigndecisions based on misinformation. this is a sad fact of life. Students typcially don't conduct interviews with older, wiser adults before they make up their mind to do something stupid. That's why suicide is the #3 killer or youth. We can allsit around all day long debating everybody's right to make up their own mind. But while we are having debates, kids arekillng themselves every single day and alarming numbers. These deaths are tragic, premature, and preventable. Elementary students making adult decisions that have enormousimplications is not fair. Youth should have the help of adults to safely navigate through the minefield of a sexualized cultureriddled with porn delivered right to your smartphone in 2nd period Social Studies.DavidReply ForwardSubject: Re:Robertson - Professional school counseling & adolelescentsexual identityAuthor: David RobertsonTopic: Discussion Forum Five (October 17 - 30)Date: October 24, 2011 10:56 PMHey Trish - Thanks for your thoughtful answer. Whatever is at the root of young people taking their lives (and you areabsolutely correct, it may be different things for different people) my heart breaks for these kids and I just pray that someintervention takes place.- DavidReply ForwardSubject: Re:Robertson - Professional school counseling & adolelescentsexual identityAuthor: David RobertsonTopic: Discussion Forum Five (October 17 - 30)Date: October 30, 2011 6:29 PMWell put, Tonia. How blessed students would be to have a person like you to walk them through theirproblems. My wife is a Christian counselor and has a very successful practice working with children through adults. She islicensed but not "state" licensed so while she cannot accept insurance she is unrestricted in her counseling approach. Mywife is happiest when she helps people experience breakthroughs. I hope you will explore your interest in this area. - DavidReply ForwardSubject: Re:TANETTA'S POST Topic: Discussion Forum Five (October 17 - 30)Author: David RobertsonDate: October 22, 2011 10:58 AMTanetta - This is more likely to happen if you were working in a private school environment. We have some very strongChristian schools in our community here that offers incredible academic instruction in a biblical worldview context that worksfor hundreds of families in our neck of the woods. - DavidReply ForwardSubject: Re:Dickerson- Professional school Counselor and LGBTQ Youth Topic: Discussion Forum Five (October 17 - 30)Author: David RobertsonDate: October 19, 2011 3:35 PMCedric - Great post on a tough issue.
