Appendix IIIPrincipal componentsanalysisWomen’s economic opportunityA new global index and rankingAppendix IIIPrincipal Components AnalysisPrincipal Components Analysis (PCA) is an econometric technique that assigns each element (indicator)in an index a weight, taking into account the covariance between indicators and the importance of aparticular element in maximising the variation in the index outcome (Women’s Economic Opportunity). In other words, it aims to minimise redundancy (covariance) between indicators and maximise variancein the outcome. The weight is calculated by taking the principal component (Eigen vector) associatedwith the highest Eigen value. This is a way of decomposing the data into independent (orthogonal)components ordered by information content. The first principal component contains the most information that is common to the largest numberof variables, and according to Ram (1982) is a natural choice for an index weighting. An importantassumption for valid PCA is that the variance is meaningful and not the result of data with largemeasurement error, and that the dynamics of interest are along the direction with the largest variance.Variation within category/indicator weights is a sign of some redundancy in the elements, or that someelements are just not as relevant in explaining the variation in the overall index. The existence of moreor-lessequal weights across categories/indicators is a sign of little redundancy across subgroups andnear-equal importance in explaining variation in the index, suggesting that the index was well-grouped.The following table gives the weights generated by PCA:Category weightsCategory Weight (%)1) Labour Policy and Practice N/A1.a) Labour Policy 14.001.b) Labour Practice 11.932) Access to Finance 11.773) Education and Training 23.294) Women’s Legal and Social Status 16.955) General Business Environment 22.06138 Economist Intelligence Unit 2010
