environmentStreamcareStreamcare, the City of Armadale’swaterways restoration project, hasassisted many landowners who havewaterways flowing through theirproperty, with advice since itsinception in 2002.The assistance is one-on-one andspecific to the owner’s property andcan include subjects such as weedcontrol, herbicides, property planningand revegetation.Off-roadvehicles brochuresOff-road vehicle use in our bushlandreserves is an illegal, but unfortunatelypersistent practice. It damages plants, moves soils (which canresult in erosion of tracks and opens upthe vegetation to weed invasion) andspreads dieback.Bushland in Lloyd Hughes Reserve inKelmscott and Leake St wetland inForrestdale has been targeted lately, inparticular. These areas are showing visibledamage to vegetation which is a hugethreat to their conservation values. The City has recently produced an offroadvehicles brochure as one step, viaeducation, to reduce the incidence ofillegal off-road vehicle use in our reserves. The brochure advises off-road vehicleusers where they can legally use off-roadvehicles and provides information aboutthe penalties that could apply if caught. Italso provides advice to the communityabout who they can contact withinformation about illegal off-road vehicleuse. For further information please contact theCity’s Environmental Officer, CorinneOmacini on 9399 0111.Giant Reed removed fromRoley Pools ReserveA Green Corp team of young people from Mission Australia have been doing a greatjob removing Giant Reed from Roley Pools Reserve recently. The Green Corps program provides training and education opportunities for youngpeople who are interested in landcare and conservation projects.Removing the Giant Reed is a very large job and physically demanding. It involvescutting down Giant Reed (which is like bamboo with canes up to 4m long) and thendragging it out of the creek line, to be removed from the site. The City of Armadale’s parks department removes and disposes of the piles of canes. To ensure the Giant Reed does not re-establish, the site will be replanted with nativespecies and maintained by the City of Armadale with the help of Armadale GosnellsLandcare Group and Friends of Roley Pools volunteers. The aim of the program is to revitalizelocal streams and improve the habitatfor native fish and wildlife through theplanting of native flora, and topromote the careful use of weedcontrol, fertilizers and pesticides bylandowners. If you have a waterway on yourproperty and would like to beinvolved in this program, pleasecontact the City’s EnvironmentalOfficer, Corinne Omacini on9399 0111.Tree puton registerA large Eucalyptus wandoo tree within theroad reserve at Wandoo Street in MtNasura has been placed on a register byCouncil in order to protect it.By issuing a tree preservation notice,Council has ensured that any futuredevelopment will need to avoid any actionthat might affect the long-term health ofthe tree. The tree is a good specimen of thewandoo species and is valued by thesurrounding residents for its appearanceand its use as a nesting site for nativebirds.Concerns had previously been expressedby nearby residents that if the adjacentproperty was developed for residentialpurposes the valued tree would be lostand the character of the street diminished.
