Summer is over and it'stime to pull up your socks and jumpin with the rest of us to gather ourthoughts and discuss what we wouldlike to see for the future. Wheresome of us will be teaching ourchildren the values of our culturaltraditions, the rest will be trying tofind and implement structure to goalong with these traditions.During the last gatherings inChilliwack and Baptiste wediscussed the value of getting inputfrom members on there visions foreconomic development and for theLand Stewardship Plan that wasdeveloped by Timberline ForestInventory Consultants (this report isin draft form for communitydiscussions).Also, to better understand the wholetreaty process, I have gone back andreviewed the first steps in the treatyprocess with the members, endingwith our current stage. I suggestedthat Chilliwack members take thebinder the office has provided andput important documents in it (eg.SOI, Constitution, Six Stages, etc.).If there are concerns or question,please contact me at 604-795-9163or 604-316-3539. I will see you atthe next round of regionalgatherings. The Chilliwack gatheringwill be held October 5, 2005 and theBaptiste gathering on October 22,2005.August GatheringsHome and AwaySylvester Samsylvester.sam@inshuckch.comThe format for the August gatheringswas changed, combining the onesheld in Skatin, Samahquam andDouglas into one held in Skatin onAugust 24, 2005. The ones usuallyheld in Mission, Chilliwack andVancouver were held in Leq:a'mel onAugust 25, 2005. Rob Reiter andJosh Alexander made presentations.This format change was used assome staff members were onholidays and this format wasrequested by the members.Rob's presentation included anoverview of what is happening withthe treaty so far and covered most ofthe chapters in the Agreement inPrinciple (AiP). Although somepeople were already wishing to moveinto implementing their rights, hecautioned us to be thorough inplanning.Josh spoke about the land aspectsconcerning what we realisticallyshould have total control over andwhat we should have a form ofjurisdiction over. The question ofwho decides on the 'value' of ourland was also raised and discussed.There were also several questionswhich were asked during thegatherings (listed below) which wereanswered by Rob or Josh.1. What is the affect of recent courtcases on our process? There is noreal bearing.2. Will all license holders lose theirlicenses in the territory? No, but wewill give out licenses in the future.3. Will we lose our status as natives?No, we will issue our own ID's andwill continue to enjoy the samerights all natives have.4. Will Forestry be held liable fortheir pre-1950 practices? No, butthey will have to repair any presentdamages before we take over theland.5. How is our land valued? B.C. andCanada say that it is valued by thetimber on it or its potential fortimber; we say it is valued by itsculture.6. What is the effect of NAFTA onour water rights? We will have a sayin the matter internationally.7. Who presently is responsible forwater quality in the territory? B.C.8. Is the pictograph above Skatinknown? No, but Maurice will beadvised to look into it.9. How will the Treaty be voted on?On voting day it will take 50% + 1 ofall eligible voters. This is unlike theusual voting method when we countonly those who show up. We havehigh hopes of closer to 100 % tocontinued Home & Away p5
