In addition, the Lane Cove Road section of the Ryde alignment presents a significant challenge in securing adedicated public transport corridor. Lane Cove Road forms a critical part of Sydney’s road network as it is akey north-south road corridor across the metropolitan region. The alignment via Rhodes provides an indirectlink between the two centres and also relies on securing public transport space on one of Sydney’s keynorth-south roads from Rhodes to Macquarie Park. The Castle Hill alignment was thestrongest north-south corridor, andtogether with the Macquarie Parkalignment via Eastwood could provide acontinuous route through GreaterParramatta. The initial cost estimates of any onealignment as light rail is approximately$1b and dependent on the specificalignment and infrastructure required tooperate the service. This scheme will provide public transportlinks that will benefit Western Sydney, enhancing opportunities for growth inemployment and city shaping.Directing of growth beyond the presentSource: Parramatta City CouncilGlobal Economic Corridor provides an Figure 7.2 Artist Impression of LRT on Windsor Road, Northmead.excellent opportunity to enhanceemployment in Parramatta and enablegreater access to jobs from disadvantaged areas in Western Sydney. The alignments chosen are strongly consistent with government policies and priorities, especially with theNSW Long Term Transport Master Plan (LTTMP). These alignments are also within identified strategiccorridors and possess strong potential for urban renewal.7.2 Greater ParramattaThere is significant potential that light railcould provide benefits in connecting thekey precincts within Greater Parramatta(shown in Figure 7.4). Opportunity existsto deliver additional benefits, most notablyan improved connection betweenParramatta CBD and Westmead, including Westmead Children’s Hospitalwhich is approximately 1km from theexisting railway station. Further work isrequired to investigate the complexities ofthis improved access between ParramattaCBD and activities within Westmead.Continued development of thesealignment(s) will contribute to refining thenetwork and identifying potential addedbenefits and opportunities which mayfurther strengthen the outcomes of theproposed scheme.Source: Parramatta City CouncilFigure 7.3 Artist Impression of LRT at Parramatta CBD,Church Street and Macquarie Street42 Parramatta City Council Western Sydney Light Rail Network - Part 1 Feasibility Report
