HANDBOOK 2010 submitted.docPage 33 of 51 Pageswith loving eyes, when we imagine the two of you together, when we think of how wonderfuland tender the pastor is, and then think of your relationship, we get jealous. And sometimes, when the pastor chooses to spend time with you rather than us, we get angry. I know it doesn’tmake sense. But, it does happen. I’m sorry. I wish it could be different, but…We who are the congregation are sorry you are caught in such an awkward situation. We can’timagine what it must feel like. It is likely just as confusing for you as it is for us.This much we know. We need a pastor. We believe your spouse was sent to us by God to be ourpastor. So, I guess that means you were sent to us as well. Maybe we can figure out a way tohonor your ministry in our midst. Maybe we can find a way to let you know how important youare. Maybe we can find a way to tell you that the confusing awkward relationship ascongregation and pastor’s spouse in which we find ourselves is precisely where God has placedus and precisely where God needs us to be.You see, we aren’t really friends – we are companions in a ministry. We are linked together for acommon mission, and we each have distinctive and important roles. Thank you for accepting thechallenging and difficult call to be a pastor’s spouse. Thank you for being a companion in theministry of the Gospel. In Christ, Ecclesia (The Congregation)”Permission for further publication or duplication of this letter may be secured by contacting theMark A. OurConference Health Plan works very hard to make mental health and counseling serviceseasily available and financially feasible to all our family members. Our DistrictSuperintendents often know of Christian counselors and/or counselors whom others havefound helpful. United Behavior Health, the company with which Blue Cross/Blue Shieldcontracts to provide mental health services, asks all the counselors with whom they arecontracted to give their specialties of service. Therefore, UBH will have recommendations ofcounselors in your area that have specialties that you might be interested in, i.e., ChristianCounseling, trauma, grief, alcohol and other drug issues, family and couple issues, etc.Information about mental health benefits may be found at: United Behavioral Health, 800-851-5188 or www.ubhonline.org.Other referral sources for couple counseling:1 American Association of Pastoral Counselors, 9504A Lee Highway, Fairfax, VA 22031-2303, 701-385-6967; email: Info@aapc.org; www.aapc.org.2 American Association for Marriage & Family Therapy, 112 South Alfred St., Alexandria,VA 22314-3061. 703-838-9808; www.aamft.org; www.therapistlocator.net.3 Yellow Pages – look under AAMFT listing or look for therapists who are state licensedas MFT’s (Marriage and Family Therapists), Licensed Professional Counselors, LicensedClinical Social Workers, or Psychologists.
