College of Agriculture & Consumer Sciences - University of GhanaB.Sc Agriculture [Crop Science]DurationCampusAwarding Faculty4 yearsLegon CampusCACSOverviewCrop Science is concerned with the application ofbiological, chemical and physical principles to cropsand cropping systems for conversion into food, feed, pharmaceuticals and ornamental commodities.and climate concerns also limit crop production inmany areas. Research and innovation is thereforea constant area of focus in Crop Science. Recentinnovations involve biotechnology and production ofbio-fuels. Biotechnology is being used to manipulatethe genetic material of plants and crops, attemptingto make them more productive or resistant todisease. Bio-fuels are manufactured from agriculturalderivates such as turning crops into energy sources.A typical example is ethanol, produced from maize.AssessmentStudents are assessed through a combination ofassignments, examinations and projects.Crop Science examines agronomic crop plants, theirgrowth habits and their genetic improvement. Italso considers the techniques to enhance a plant’sability to convert sunlight into usable energy, fightoff diseases and insects, and produce crops that areeconomically and environmentally sustainable. In addition to teaching and research, specialists inCrop Science offer their expertise in agrichemical, seed, grain, nursery and food processing companies.Others work as private farmers or professionalconsultants.Aims and Objectives• Demonstrate an understanding of the biologyof plants in their environment and the variousfunctions of plants for people and animals, based on such knowledge as plant physiology, morphology and taxonomy, biochemistry, organicand physical chemistry, statistics, plant breedingand genetics.• Ability to apply the knowledge of the role ofnatural resources and environmental factors onplant and agro-system development for open andprotected plant production systems.• Demonstrate appreciable knowledge of theimportance of ensuring good environment, highfood security (quality and quantity) and maintainingbiodiversity.• Ability to work with and solve problems connectedto crops, crop production, and environment.• Ability to collect data [simple measurements infield and laboratory], calculate (simple statisticanalysis) and inform about the results.Industry/Global TrendsOn a global scale, the production of adequate andaccessible food is a considerable challenge.
