Term Definition<br />

Fraudulent Alteration Involves the alteration of a genuine document in an attempt to enable it to be used for<br />

travel by an unauthorized person or to an unauthorized destination. The biographical<br />

details of the genuine holder, particularly the portrait, form the prime target for such<br />

alteration.<br />

A design printed on both sides of the document or an inner page of an MRP which<br />

when viewed by transmitted light forms an interlocking image.<br />

An MRV conforming with the dimensional specifications contained in Doc 9303,<br />

Part 2, sized to completely fill a passport visa page.<br />

Refers to Face Image as set forth in Doc 9303, Part 3, Volume 2.<br />

Guilloche design A pattern of continuous fine lines, usually computer generated, and forming a unique<br />

image that can only be accurately re-originated by access to the equipment, software<br />

and parameters used in creating the original design.<br />

Heat-sealed laminate A laminate bonded to the MRTD by the application of heat and pressure.<br />

Identification card<br />

(ID-card)<br />

A card used as an identity document.<br />

Identity Document Document used to identify its holder and issuer, which may carry data required as<br />

input for the intended use of the document.<br />

Impostor A person who assumes another person’s identity.<br />

Infra-red drop-out ink An ink which forms a visible image when illuminated with light in the visible part of the<br />

spectrum and which cannot be detected when illuminated in the infra-red region.<br />

Intaglio A printing process used in the production of security documents in which engraved<br />

plates, high printing pressure and special inks create a relief design with tactile feel on<br />

the surface of the document.<br />

Integrated circuit (IC) Electronic component designed to perform processing and/or memory functions.<br />

Interoperability The ability of several independent systems or sub-system components to work<br />

together.<br />

Iris (printing) See Rainbow Printing.<br />

Laminate A clear material, which may have security features such as optically variable<br />

properties, designed to be securely bonded to a document surface.<br />

Laser engraving A process whereby text and images (usually personalized images) are created by a<br />

photo chemical reaction within a substrate using a laser.<br />

Laser-perforation A process whereby text and/or images are created by perforating the substrate with<br />

a laser.<br />

Latent image A hidden image formed within a relief image which is composed of line structures<br />

which vary in direction and profile resulting in the hidden image appearing at<br />

predetermined viewing angles.
