Chapter 1 - IntroductionSystem Overview1.1 System Overview4Motion is designed as an end-to-end solution based on the following elements:• Base Transceiver Station (BTS) equipment with an optional localized access service network gateway(ASN-GW). There are three BTS configurations:» Indoor modular Macro BTS.» All-outdoor modular Macro BTS.» All-outdoor single sector Micro BTSThe above configurations share some common equipment, such as Outdoor Unit (ODU), Antenna,and GPS (see “BTS Common Equipment” on page 5).• ASN-GW, provided by either Alvarion or its leading WiMAX partners. There are three configurations:» Centralized» Mini-Centralized» Distributed• AAA servers provided by either Alvarion or its leading WiMAX partners• STAR Management Suite for network management, includes the following management tools:» AlvariSTAR: Base station management for WiMAX network deployment and operation» StarACS: Device management system supporting any TR-69 device» StarDM: Large-scale, multi-protocol device management system for automated device activationand service introduction» StarQuality: Performance and traffic monitoring system for ensuring QoS and WiMAX networkoptimization» StarReport: Business Objects-based tool providing network configuration and performancevisibility• Customer premises equipment (CPE) and handsetsFigure 1-1 illustrates the entire service provider environment and 4Motion solution elements within theradio access network, core network and subscriber environment.4Motion Installation Manual2
